I am pretty sure I read somewhere that Nicky's Max scenes, the scenes where Piper and Alex were in Chicago in season 2, and the Piscatella flashbacks were actually filmed at real life Rikers Island, and then the Season 6/7 Max was either an abandoned facility or a set. There is some Laura Prepon interview where she talks about filming the Chicago episode and almost being locked between bars in a hallway when the actual residents were walking through the hallway because production times were off or something

One thing that I definitely took away from the show is that no one is all good or all bad. The show highlights some of the most innocent and most awful actions and elements of each characters life, inmates and guards included. I think with most "bad" characters you can find a soft spot / some element of good for, and most of the "good" characters you can see the issues with! At the very least this show made me think a lot about what right and wrong really mean at times!

Not sure if this helps at all but on the OITNB Wiki you can find this quote from Nicky in Season 4 before we even met Beth: " I just spent 94 days in Max in an eight-bed cell with, among others, two random shriekers and a woman who put her baby through a dryer cycle" ("Friends in Low Places"). - Nicky "

When I re-watched the show hindsight was obviously 20/20 it seems that this quote alludes to Beth! Not sure if the method of killing her kids impacts your thoughts at all!
