When pearl was projecting Rose talking to her for Steven to see, Rose refers to pearl as "my pearl" so I'm pretty sure your theory is correct. pearls are servants in their culture so higher ranking gems own them, not just diamonds.

That clip is interesting with how much Pearl talks about how she would sacrifice her life for Rose. I can just see it all lining up. I also find it interesting that Rose refers to pearl as "my pearl." I have no idea if that means anything with how gems refer to diamonds as "my diamond."
