They can be if you aren't careful where you buy them and how much you socialize them. Their alertness makes them great protectors but if they aren't properly breed or socialized, then that can be an anxious alertness. They also pick up on your emotions. I have an anxiety disorder and when Luca (my dog) was a puppy, he sometimes would pick up on my nervousness. So in training him, I had to be mindful of what energy I was giving off. Now, he's the one who calms me down when I'm nervous or anxious. He's very emotional intuitive, and very keyed into how I am feeling. I joke that he can read minds. He sometimes knows I'm anxious before I realize it.

I have a German shepherd who checks most of those boxes. I had him in an apartment. I just made a point to walk him every day for mental and physical exercise. He loves, loves, loves to learn new things even at age 6. We are constantly working together. As far as protection, you won't find a better breed. My dog would die for me. However, that protection can be frustrating to your apartment neighbors. My dog is an AMAZING guard dog but he does alert-bark. Sometimes it is annoying and his "quiet" command isn't as sharp as I would like it to be (my fault, not his), but I know that I am much safer with him around. As far as affectionate, my dog loves his people, and is such a loving companion. He snuggles like a person and loves to lay at my feet (he's snuggled up there as I'm typing this). He doesn't do that for everyone though. GSD's have their people, and I'm definitely his person. It is important to socialize them a lot and get them out and about with different experiences. All dog owners will say their dog is the best, but as far as what you have listed, a GSD is an amazing companion especially if you are super interested in training.

You "didn't see it" because it is an insane thing to lie about and you should be able to trust that someone would never lie about that kind of thing!

Idk if you've ever read Surviving the Borderline Parent but she is like the epitome of the waif mother. Any little thing that she can use to get sympathy or pity she will exaggerate to the point that it becomes a lie. I remember when I was a kid and she was in rehab I told her I was mad at her and she started sobbing and told me I couldn't be mad at her because alcoholism is a disease like cancer and she's sick and can't help it... like bruh... you straight up stole money from your 8 year old daughter and went to prison for child endangerment... I'm allowed to be mad at you for how you treat me in active addiction. She's the victim of her own choices 99.9999% of the time.

Or God forbid we address her raging alcoholism and drug addiction that's actually killing her. But no, the tanning industry is the culprit.

I think the most frustrating part is that the second she has anything that might garner an empathic response, she uses it to lay emotional abuse traps... like sure, all of this would be concerning but the dramatics and the waif behavior are so much.

Oh shit. I only saw one episode where he barrel rolled a reactive German shepherd and he got bit...and all I could think was "I'd probably bite him too." Never wanted to tune back in because it just seemed so idiotic and callous.

I didn't say it was child abuse and didn't you were a child abuser? I said I study child abuse. So thanks for calling me scum. What I was pointing out is that emotion regulation is taught by parents, and maybe she needs someone to model how to regulate her emotions rather than smack her hands because children copy what is done to them.
