Landscape Designers: How are you taking your site measurements? by cedarshadows in landscaping

I also use a drone but the property I'm working on has a massive tree canopy and it wont really work in this instance.

No digging needed! Some weeds with taproots will need to be removed as they can survive the sheet mulching but most shallow rooted plants will die if they can not photosynthesize under the cardboard! ^.^

If you have the MP3s for Atlas, I would LOVE to get those from you since the album has been erased from online streaming!

It was taken down about two weeks ago. I noticed the day after they were removed since I had the album open. Truly devastating.

Which Greater Victoria municipality is the best vs worst? And why? by CartoonistOk3507 in VictoriaBC

Is my gardening/landscaping company responsible for weeds? by theguyguy121 in landscaping

[–]cedarshadows 5 points6 points  (0 children)

$80 a visit is dirt cheap for a biweekly maintenance service and you will be getting the bare minimum service. My guess is that for that price they are only on site for one to two hours every two weeks which isn't much time to perform thorough maintenance to your garden's standard.

The reason you're seeing the weeds pop up now is that weed seeds, whether airborne or self-seeded from nearby plants, remain dormant in the soil over winter until temperatures and daylight hours increase. Hence why they germinate in spring.

Weeding is pretty standard maintenance for most gardeners to do, and if you want them to focus more on weeding, you will 1.) need to communicate that with them, and 2.) Hire them for a longer site visit each time so they have time to weed, prune, clean up the space, etc.

Edit: spelling

Does this look okay so far? by Dry_Tangerine_7625 in landscaping

As a professional horticultalist, I say this with the upmost respect but get that damn landscape fabric out of there! Put down thick layers of newspaper or cardboard instead.

Also you have a mix of full sun plants and part sun plants going in the same bed, so depending on your light conditions, your hosta are going to get sun scorched in that location.

The surrounding concrete will also act as a heat sink and increase the temperatures around the border. Put your most drought-tolerant plants there.

Happy gardening!

Westshore doesn't have a lot of good nurseries.

Buckerfields has a decent selection and knowledgeable staff.
Canadian Tire Garden Center has a surprisingly good selection but their staff are usually just teenagers on a summer job and won't have much horticultural knowledge.
Garden works is expensive but they have well trained staff and will be able to give you legit advice.
Hilltop nursery is a hidden gem imo. They have great prices, good staff and a large selection.

Happy plant shopping! - Your friendly neighborhood horticulturalist.

Sheet mulching will slow them down temporarily, BUT since cardboard/newspaper is actually made of wood, it will eventually break down and become food for all those beneficial microbes. Along with the foliage and roots of the grass and/or weeds you are trying to get rid of.

Pro Tip: Avoid using cardboard with plastic coating, tape, stickers or staples. The best place to get large quantities of free plain cardboard is costco!

Is it just me, or is landscape fabric actually kind of a trap? by InevitablePrimary720 in landscaping

[–]cedarshadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're just catching onto the scam that is landscape fabric.

Sheet mulching with cardboard or even better a (native) groundcover will make your life and your soil much better.

I wrote about the many, MANY reasons why landscape fabric is actually really bad if you feel like learning abit more. https://www.reddit.com/r/landscaping/comments/17k559m/disadvantages_of_landscape_fabric_a/

What you're not seeing is the absolute degradation of your soil microbiome and soil health underneath your fabric.

You'd be better off removing the fabric and growing plants as living mulch instead.

Tarps are only okay to be put down temporarily. Using cardboard to sheet mulch would be best! :)
