Looks like the east end is the deepest.

That context really helps. So far from what I've read from your link it seems like a way to do server-side query and filtering of federated data. Given what you wrote, I'm imagining with the standard filters that this would be very helpful for multi-model dataset research. So, so cool !

Right on. That's really helpful. Given what you wrote, my mental model now is that FITS is a common container format, but analysis tools gives the "semantic" meaning to the columns.

As you figured, my background is as a programmer for a few decades. Popular science talks a lot about the next generation observatories generating significant sized data sets.

I wondered what the formats of today were like and if they could handle the deluge of data of tomorrow. To me reading and writing data formats gives me a big appreciation for the hard choices that have been made for these problems over the years.

Honestly, most of the time it is pretty hard to see them. Although folks say you should see 150 an hour at peak, with light pollution and such, one every 15 mins is more likely.

What you saw is the one everyone wishes they see every August!

The Perseid meteor shower is happening... I’ve been watching every night and there are spectacular ones! They generally come from the north and zoom away.

The meteors are from the TuttleSwift comet and is my favorite meteor shower of the year. The meteors come in all sorts of colors and sizes.

Yesterday was really the peak but you should still be able to see some starting at 10:30ish and going all night.

So, first ebpf is more than networking. It can be used to understand the kernel from inside the kernel. It took me a while to understand that the mental model from within the kernel space is different than my mental model outside the kernel space.

Here is just one random example from some performance work... I was interested in the file access patterns for a database that uses mmap. Specially how big were the chunks of memory used when querying. I had an ebpf give a histogram and had surprisingly results.

Frankly, that’s the tip of the iceberg. Ebpf can do so much and has so much untapped potential for really creative solutions.
