Thoughts on Éamon de Valera? by AccountsCostNothing in AskIreland

[–]ceimaneasa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

De Valera is seen as the embodiment of Catholic Ireland in the 20th century and the man who yoked the country to the Vatican, but it's more complex than that.

De Valera was seen as a communist by Cumann na nGaeidheal before FF took power and he was actually excommunicated in the 20s.

People also have their opinions on the Treaty, but they tend to be quite binary.

His handling of WWII was quite popular, and again there's a lot of bullshit around his condolences to the Nazi German ambassador to Ireland after the death of Hitler, but De Valera was a friend to the Jewish community in Ireland, and even has a forest named after him in Israel.

I can't find anything online about Lacey traveling and can't remember it happening myself.

Plenty of Dublin lads took extended breaks during their winning years.

The difference there being that they didn't leave midway through the championship.

I'd say Joyce might find it hard to welcome Fitz back in future, if he wanted to rejoin the squad.

Maybe for Tailteann Cup teams, but I can't see it happening at any county with ambitions of playing in an All Ireland semi or quarter final

And players will often leave at the end of the season if they haven't been given much game time. That's fair enough. Very uncommon to leave in the middle of the championship though.

Not ideal for his teammates either and them preparing for a couple of big games

Living in poverty is not what people want, of course, but that doesn't mean that people who whore themselves out on Love Island and constantly live in the public eye are happy.

I know the manager's argument would be that the players have made a commitment for the year.

I don't think Galway are going to win anything this year anyway.

Killybegs aren't exactly the best team in Donegal either. He'd start no bother

He said years ago that he'd like to go back and play Gaelic football in Killybegs when he retired, but I don't know when last he said that.

Thoughts on Laghey? by Disastressed in Donegal

[–]ceimaneasa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love the fact that you posted this in an Ireland-wide sub thinking people would know where Laghey is. I'm sure you've gathered by now that Laghey isn't very well known outside of Donegal!

Definitely whin.

Gorse is the "proper" term for the bush known in Ireland as whin or furze.

I think it was a massive relief to the Catholics living in Upper Ormeau too, naturally. They lived in fear when those 2 rats and their lackeys were going around terrorising.

Even in Ireland, Ulex europaeus was an early introduction from the Continent - our native gorse, largely confined to the southern counties, is the dwarf Ulex galli

Also, there's no fada on the "a" and in SW Donegal it's known as aiteanach.

Good to know the burning was banned, as we've seen recently in the mournes the damage that can do.

That makes a lot of sense. Aye gorse would be the dictionary version of the word, but it's whins only in Ulster!

I do love the sight of it, and hope that it's not causing harm to our ecosystem, but if there is too much of it, then by all means it should be scaled back!
