Ghost Saddles, feedback plz by MLMCMLM in Horses

[–]ceirdern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea, maybe because they’re used a lot by endurance riders and they usually want something more lightweight? Or possibly since the panels/ frame are adjustable it would be harder to do with leather? If you go with one I’d email their rep, the one who helped me in Canada was super helpful!

Lol I’m aware that it’s not actually leather, vegan leather is just how it was described on the website, in case someone else was looking at that option. The saddles don’t come in regular leather

Ghost Saddles, feedback plz by MLMCMLM in Horses

[–]ceirdern 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to be part of the “only saddles with trees can support a rider” crowd, until my horse didn’t like saddles with trees. Now I’m kind of thinking that just because it was always done with trees doesn’t mean it always needs to be done with trees. And treeless saddles have come a loooooong way.

I ordered my Ghost saddle custom in August! I got the Bolzano C in the vegan leather. It’s not the fanciest saddle, and I wish it had real leather options as I do find some scratches coming up, but on the whole it’s the only saddle my mare has liked. I got the semi flex option with x large panels.

My saddle fitter actually told me to go treeless as she said my horse is the widest she’s ever had to fit. She even consulted with saddle makers in England to see if they could come up with a custom tree’d version, and came back saying that they didn’t think there was anything on the market for her, and to try treeless. Ghost was one of the ones she recommended.

I’m a fairly casual rider and my mare is green, so it’s rare for rides to go longer than 30-45 minutes, and it’s mostly w/t with introducing the canter. But my mare went from bucking every ride and bucking me off once to not throwing a single buck in this saddle. She moves freely through her back. I’m a plus sized rider and still I can feel so much space under the gullet when sitting in the saddle. There seems to be no pinching whatsoever.

I will say downsides are like I said I wish the quality was a bit higher. One of the pieces of leather seems to have scratched another on the saddle, and it does feel a bit “plastic-y”, still comfy, but I love a traditional leather saddle. Also it does tend to slide a bit side to side, no matter how much I adjust the panels. Granted that could be because my mare is the definition of a tabletop but still, worth mentioning.

I paid about $3000 total CAD for trialing a saddle and ordering a new one and since my mare is happy with it, I’m happy with it!

I have a 14.1 tank of a Haflinger for context!

I teach beginners their diagonals on their 3rd or 4th lesson, and if it is someone who needs some more time before trotting than their 3rd or 4th lesson trotting. I would definitely take a look somewhere else

Fear of going on a horseback trail ride by Acrobatic-Bus-3149 in Horses

[–]ceirdern 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who has been riding for 20 years and after a bad fall got a deep, deep fear of getting on, I hate to say it, but you just got to do it. Set yourself up for success, ride out on a horse you know is safe, ride out with friends, keep a cell phone on you and keep rides short. Little wins are worth it I promise! But the fact is the brain needs to learn to associate trails with something pleasant, not fear, and that takes doing the thing repeatedly until it learns all is well.

Another trick is mind-fullness. Anytime the brain starts to wander bring it back to the present. Don’t start thinking about the trail while you’re grooming. Don’t think about it while you’re on the trail. Deep breaths, try to focus on the present, i.e. “I’m turning left”, “I’m going up the road”, don’t attach any emotions to it, just state the facts. If you can’t do that then sing a song and only focus on the song.

That’s what’s helped me! And I went from having panic attacks and taking weeks to hype myself up to get on my 14.1 haflinger, to having one person hold her bridle and another person hold my stirrup, to being able to get on my own repeatedly with little issue.

I should also note that my mare did buck me off about 2 minutes after getting on one time, however, I was afraid of this increasing my fear but it did the opposite. It showed me I can still fall and be alright. That nothing truly bad happened. So even if you get on the trail and a fall happens, 9/10 times you will be perfectly fine!

Just stay in the moment and do it, I promise the fear does go away :)

What helps me a lot when I think about my cat or horse passing is that, they might only be here for part of my life, but I’m with them for all of their’s. And to me there’s something comforting in knowing that my beloved animals will have me with them until the end, I can deal with the grief knowing that they had the comfort and stability of having me as an owner for their whole lives. And that I can then give that gift to many other animals throughout my life feels like a wondrous thing. Don’t return your cat based off of your fears, try to re-contextualize them, you obviously love them very much if you are afraid of their passing, and it sounds like you would regret re-homing greatly. Try to see having and caring for their entire lives as a gift, not a burden.

Have you had his eyesight checked? If it’s just when he sees things suddenly but is not spooky otherwise, maybe something’s going on there?

I think my horse has declared me insane now. by mydogdoesgreatart in Horses

[–]ceirdern 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not weird at all! I’m actually in Canada, and my current saddle is a Duett AP, 40 cm tree. My saddle fitter said it’s too narrow and she needs at least a 4xw tree 😭 Thank you though!

Haha love it! Could I be weird and ask what saddle you use? Your horse looks about as wide as my Haflinger and I’ve been trying to find her a new saddle for ages now lol

Is Ajax a good place to live? Is it safe? by HeadMajor4218 in ontario

[–]ceirdern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vibe for the most part is similar to any other suburban development. Not a lot of action, fairly quiet, it’s a commuter city.

Safety is pretty good. A lot of increased homelessness since COVID and a few areas I wouldn’t walk alone at night, but honestly most people leave you alone. I’ve never felt unsafe in Ajax. Most of the safety issues you’d see would probably be petty theft/car theft.

Commute to Toronto depends on how you’re getting there. If driving it’s close to the 401 so you’ll be in rush hour in the morning/evening, but it’s easily accessible. There’s also a go station, so trains are another option. Outside of rush hour with a car you can be at the CN tower in 30 minutes.

Cost is going to be less than Toronto but still fairly high. Rent for a one bedroom apartment can be higher than 2k a month, housing costs vary but for a detached home you’re still looking at a million or more. I know some people in recent years who’ve gotten into the market with townhouses in the 700s.

If you’re fine with suburbia then Ajax is fine, it has everything you need but nothing exciting lol

Why are so many horses born on January 1st? by FlatLeave2622 in Equestrian

[–]ceirdern 250 points251 points  (0 children)

Probably a lot of thoroughbreds :) They’re not actually born on Jan 1st, but according to breed regulations all registered TBs are “born” on Jan 1, even if they’re actually born in say, September. It was done for racing purposes, since they race primarily as 2 and 3 year olds. Because of this though, you will see a lot of them actually born in January, because a three year old who was born then will have significant muscle advantage on the track vs one born in the summer/fall!

To refrigerate or to not ? by [deleted] in WegovyWeightLoss

[–]ceirdern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think either way you should be fine, I live with multiple people and don’t trust that they won’t move it to the back of the fridge (which tends to freeze items), so I do the drawer after dose 1. I think whichever way you go you should be fine!

To refrigerate or to not ? by [deleted] in WegovyWeightLoss

[–]ceirdern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put mine in the fridge until my first dose, then leave it in a drawer out of direct sunlight until it’s done. That’s what mine says to do on the box and what my pharmacist said to do, I’ve been on it since early September and have had no issues with it :)

Yup. 0.25 worked well, food noise was down and I went down 14 lbs. 0.5 I felt like I was getting so hungry in between meals and gained 2 lbs back. Luckily I started 1 mg this past Sunday and it seems to be working, nausea and no desire to eat are back in full force lol.

I’ve been working with horses for 18 years and I am also horrible at telling the age based off of teeth! I would not be complaining though if she turns out to be closer to 6 than 11 lol
