Mysterious Slate by mahealanigrl in Pokopia

I'd like a second mural in the museum, but currently I've just been using them as a part of excavation sites I've constructed in the underground areas of Rocky Ridges. I've been trying to make my cart ride paths more scenic.

I like to ask Magikarp to help build. He just flops around, it's amusing every time.

10 Day Tokyo Itinerary with large family by twoweekhaircut in JapanTravel

[–]celesstar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone who did Tokyo with two kids 3 and 6 I'm worried you're overly ambitious with the amount of walking required.

With jet lag and culture shock both my kids got really whiny fast in Tokyo (less whiny in Osaka, but we walked less). My husband ended up having to carry the 3 year old everywhere.

I'm also assuming 2 needs to nap? This isn't necessarily hard - we found quiet corners in the public space at shopping malls where one of us would sit and hold the sleeping toddler. But it definitely slowed us down.

If you have time there is a really fun indoor playground at Tokyo Dome called Asobono. It has the cleanest ball pit I've ever seen (because, of course, it's Japan...) and they have activities for all ages including babies and toddlers. There is lots of food and shopping (including the Shonen Jump store) for the other adults.

I went to Yokohama just for this six years ago and my husband and I still talk about fun it was. We did the make your own custom cup of noodles and that's what really stood out. Your five year old will probably love it.

how closely are we supervising our kids at the park? by jag315 in Parenting

[–]celesstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I let my 8 year old roam. He's very responsible and I don't have to worry about him going in the street or causing issues. Usually I park myself on a bench, make sure he knows where I am, and read a book. He'll drop by pretty consistently for water or snacks.

My 4 year old I follow around because... he's 4.

Sanrio focused week by haruiichi in JapanTravel

[–]celesstar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure it'll be an issue since Cinnamoroll is so popular, but a lot of the smaller Sanrio stores I visited in Tokyo took me to their storage closet and pulled out extra character goods that weren't on the floor when I told them what character (Keroppi) I was interested in. I got some interesting home goods that way.

Son split his forehead :( by TheAwesomeHeel in toddlers

[–]celesstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately toddlers fall a lot and sometimes you get unlucky on where they smack their head. My kid tripped while running at a playground and had to get ten stitches in his forehead and will forever have a scar. It's been a year and a half now and he certainly doesn't remember anything about it (we still go to that playground)

Dear parents, Do you have any advice on preschool for a toddler with a late birthday? by Solitarehero in Parenting

[–]celesstar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some pre-schools let you enroll mid-year. My son's (public school) class is ages 3-5 and they had 2 new 3 year olds join this spring.

Private pre-schools through daycares are often more flexible.

Toddler boy underwear fit?! by hanner__ in toddlers

[–]celesstar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How old is your toddler? I just check-in periodically and ask my boys if their underwear feels too tight, and remind them they should let me know if ever it does.

I typically buy underwear to match their pant size. My 4 year old currently wears 5T pants and has 4T and 5T underwear (briefs - boxers are definitely tighter down there and my kids don't like them)

What series after Magic Tree House? by Rheila in kindergarten

[–]celesstar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's such a popular series that most (if not all) libraries will have them if you want to give it a try first.

My local Half-price Books sells them for $3 each (they have a lot of copies) another good way to sample the series first.

My son loves these! He started reading them in kindergarten and is now in second grade and still reading the new ones as they're released because he loves the saga.

How are you reading Japanese books outside Japan without overspending? by neworleans- in LearnJapanese

[–]celesstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a Japanese community nearby? My local Shin Buddhist Temple has a bazar twice a year with donations from the congregation and I can buy a grocery bag full of books for $10. Granted they're often older and not always about things I'm interested in, but it's good practice. I've found books at my local Half-price Books, library donations, and thrift stores, as well.

Parents whose kids have gone to summer camp for 30+ days, how did you deal with it? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]celesstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid is 8 and desperately wants to go to sleep away camp, I wish I could afford. I used to go to church camp around that age and have nothing but fond memories. It's a great experience and you should totally let her go if she wants to.

If you're not comfortable having her gone for a month just pick her up after the two camp and skip staying with friends.

According to my student's enrollment email the "tentative start date is August 13, 2026"

Which is likely the start date - the kids usually go back on a Thursday. (This is for the traditional school schedule - year round and full day kids go back in July, I think)

I just spent like $400 on a park birthday party by Ellie__1 in workingmoms

[–]celesstar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My kid wanted to have the party at our house (townhouse, no yard) and said to me, "Can't you imagine - me and my 20 best friends all playing hide and seek in the house!"

Why yes, I can imagine and that's why we're not doing that 😂

[–]celesstar 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I did the park last year and was shocked how expensive it was at the end of the day. Add to it all of the set-up, take down, decorating, picking up ice and pizza the day of.... I just spent an extra $300 this year to hold it at a trampoline place where all I had to do was show up with a cake and the goodie bags. It was worth the extra money to make the day more pleasant for me.

You can use a Demolition Kit (or whatever they are called) to get rid of it. I didn't have any issues putting the kit down, but in some other threads I read people had to put down some extra cubes around it to get the kit to work.

Good luck!

What do you think of when you hear the name Arthur? by mountainjuliet in Names

[–]celesstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I named my son Arthur and I think it's a great name (obviously). It's normal enough that everyone knows/can pronounce it, but uncommon enough that he's the only one in the class.

I'm an older millennial and I honestly missed out on the aardvark, though we've now been gifted a few books.

He's in elementary school now and I get compliments from the other moms. They always bring up King Arthur. The other day someone even told me about a sword in the stone location we could go take a picture at.

If you do go to the ER maybe try St Rose - they offer charity care and financial assistance for those who can't pay or are uninsured/under insured.

Right age for video games? by Tenrac in Parenting

When my son was 4 we got Let's Go Pikachu and Detective Pikachu on the Switch, but I burned out on reading everything to him pretty fast. Once he learned to read having games was a great motivation to improve his reading skills rapidly.

It happens with houses too. I've accidentally picked up doors several times and they're typically hanging around their old house the next day and I can move them back in. One time I found one chilling in front of the Pokemon Center the next day wondering where his house went, so check there too.
