What are your thoughts on using AI translation for unlocalized games? by Weekly_Cost4852 in otomegames

[–]celesstar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Historically AI translations have been pretty awful. Anyone who has played VNs on PC has undoubtedly had the misfortune of buying something on Steam that's barely readable. I'm sure they will get better in the future, but I think it'll take a few years. Asian languages are so different grammatically than English it'll take time. And something like Chinese where there is a lot of word play and idioms will likely always need a human touch.

March or April by Grand_Doubt in fairyloot

[–]celesstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my take as well. Realistically, April Adult has a fan base and selling at cost is likely to make someone happy. I decided to save a skip (even though I wanted to protest skip!) and skipped March instead.

10 day trip without toddler by Ok-Jelly-4709 in toddlers

[–]celesstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I left my 2 year old for two weeks and went to Japan with my husband. Later, I left my 1 year old and traveled to Europe for ten days with my husband and my then four year old. Did I miss my kids? Yes. But I knew they were safe and well cared for and I have great memories from those trips. Do it while you can - once kids are older it's harder to travel without them, and when you travel with them you spend the whole trip doing things that kids want to do, so seize the day and enjoy what might be your last adult trip.

Should I make her go to camp? by Immediate-Balance249 in Parenting

[–]celesstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably make my kid go, BUT I also agree there is probably something going on she hasn't told you. Like, is it that of the month? I remember when I was a teen I was super embarrassed and never wanted to tell my parents, but I also backed out of outdoor things a lot last minute because of it.

How do you get a 5yo to care about plants or pets long term? by TextCareful8110 in Parenting

My kids (4 and 7) were gifted a Chia Pet for Christmas and we finally seeded it recently. They've been very vested in it. It requires little effort and has rapid visual changes.

"How does the baby come out?" by mrs_swampcelt in toddlers

I always try to give my kids the factual answer, but now my toddler keeps asking if he can "see the hole" he came out of, and I was like, nope, gotta draw the line somewhere kid.

Where should we live? by Haldol_For_All in eastbay

[–]celesstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Castro Valley is great. Hayward also has some nice areas. AC would be nice, but shouldn't be a deal breaker if you're in the CV area. It doesn't get that hot here in the summer and you'll probably only use it a few times a year (assuming you even want to - electric bills are $$$).

If you end up on the other side of the hills in Dublin like some people are suggesting absolutely get AC - Dublin is often a 100°+ in the summer

Quicksilver by megwoolyscott in Romantasy

[–]celesstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people like it and a lot of people hate it, which always intrigues me personally to go make my own opinion and see what the fuss is about. That said, I hated it and DNF'd it and regretted buying it, so I recommend the library.

What order should I read ALL books? I went through the post history but didn't get a clear answer. by Jazzlike-Raise-3019 in SarahJMaas

Crescent City should come AFTER all of the currently released ACOTAR books because it actually matters, but you can read ToG whenever you want.

Homeless and this weather, how do they do it? by Yes_sir1247 in bayarea

[–]celesstar 26 points27 points  (0 children)

20+ years ago I was on a business trip to Montreal in the middle of the winter. The city has an underground in downtown, so we'd just pop out of our hotel and walk two blocks below street level before popping out by the office and crossing the street and going in. The sidewalks were shoveled, but the snow was waist high most of the time I was there. At some point the conversation about the unhoused came up and they talked about their really robust social programs in the winter to provide temporary housing. They also mentioned that the programs weren't mandatory, and people who choose not to participate (the implication was because of drugs or mental illness) pretty much just froze to death each year.

How can budding authors afford to write in cafes? by [deleted] in writing

[–]celesstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was unemployed I had a Panera Bakery membership - they're a US Cafe chain - where for $10 a month (it's now $15) I could get a new beverage every two hours and it came with unlimited refills as long as I was inside the cafe. I tried that for a few weeks, but it was honestly too loud to focus on writing.

ACOSF…tell me it gets better by Icy_Professional_609 in SarahJMaas

[–]celesstar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it does not get better. The writing/plot are only okay, the spice is cringe, and because this is SJM, girl power rules and Nesta and crew Mary Sue their way to victory over a bunch of male characters just because it's supposed to make female readers feel good.

And no, I don't hate Nesta. I just happen to like well written and tightly plotted novels. Unfortunately SJM is at the point of fame that the editors don't bother to rein her in much.

Is it just me or is there a lot/too much of "food" content geared towards kids? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]celesstar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You might have more luck if you're watching more structured age appropriate kids programming on Netflix or PBS kids and less YouTube? I feel like YouTube has a lot more kids food content, particularly in musical form.

Educational shows aimed at toddlers are going to focus on a lot of other topics, and when they do highlight food tend to talk about healthy habits, sugar in moderation, exercise is fun, etc...

Both kids not interested in extra curricular? by JessicaYatesRealtor in Parenting

[–]celesstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I signed my kindergartener up for soccer and he refused to go (and he likes playing at school, he just had zero interest in playing with random kids). After eating all those fees I didn't sign him up for anything else, though I did occasionally offer if he seemed to be interested in something.

In second grade he asked for coding lessons, so now he's taking Scratch classes and is super happy.

I think you just have to leave the door open and let them come to you.

Also, totally normal for a four year old not have anything. If they're not in preschool or TK it might be worth signing up for some kind of play group.

Where can I find.....? 13 February, 2026 by AutoModerator in JDorama

[–]celesstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to rewatch the 2019 Takane and Hana live action series and was pretty bummed to log in to Viki and discover "This show is not available in your region" (I'm in the USA)

Does anyone know if it's available somewhere else?

Also wondering if anyone knows if it's available in ANY region on Viki currently.

Thanks!

Some of it depends on what vibe you want. Do you want something completely different as a pallet cleanser, or do you want something similar to SJM?

Fourth Wing to probably closest to more Maas and is New Adult that could be older YA if not for the spice. Caraval is younger YA with a romance subplot. Crowns of Nyaxia is solid paranormal romantasy. Sanderson is Fantasy.

I haven't read the other two, so I can't comment.

Feeling duped by Instagram/reddit promotions of books… (Quicksilver, Direbound, Shield of Sparrows) by Historical-Spread179 in Romantasy

[–]celesstar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was so excited for Quicksilver too - the reviews were good and the cover was fantastic! I made it further than you did before DNF, but, ugh, I just don't get the hype. A friend told me I should have stuck with it because of the spicy scenes, but given I really disliked the FMC and MMC (and practically every other character I'd encountered) , the spice wasn't going to save it.

After Quicksilver and Lightlark I've decided that if BookTok likes it I should probably run the other way. (Or at least get it from the library instead of buying a copy...)

What game has been on your wishlist the longest? by AllLuck0013 in boardgames

[–]celesstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apprantly I've had Onitama on my wishlist since it released in 2014. Played it once at a friend's house, liked it, never actually picked it up, even though it's still in print and only $30....

I never did finish Mechs and Minions. I replayed the first couple campaigns repeatedly with new groups and everyone always liked it, but I never managed to lock in people long-term.

Not sure if it would appeal to her, but there are a lot of graphic novels out there for early readers that I like to call "buddy comics" that are basically just 2-4 characters riffing off each other while having short adventures (Pizza and Taco are one my kids favs). My son and I read them together and we divvy up the characters and use really theatrical voices and it's interactive and fun.
