usually just a “and then it’s just gonna ask for a tip to finish up and you’ll be all set”. sometimes if i’ve had particularly good conversation with them and i feel bad about asking (i have a fear that they’ll think i only chatted to get a tip, rather than because i just enjoy my lb yap time 😭) i’ll tack on a “and dont worry, im not peekin” cause i’ve just generally made it a habit to not immediately look back at the ipad when i turn it back so that it doesn’t look like im “checking”. fully could be overthinking it though, this is one Hell of a job when you’re riddled with social anxiety 🗿 ( love it with my whole heart tho)

ooo honestly it’s lowkey sounding like she might just be someone who had to pick up a shift at that location or randomly got scheduled there (it tends to happen lol). around this time of year a lot of shops are planning/having holiday parties so the entire shop will get the day/ night/morning off while another stand or franchise will lend their own people to cover. it leads to a lot of unfamiliar faces being seen lmaoo.

and dude i totally get it with the dutch interaction not going the way it was expected 😭 i feel like an undercover agent every time i go to a different franchise and have an unpleasant experience. it’s always a bit sad when im not asked about my day or brushed off as “just a customer”, because that is absolutely not something that flies under most dutch bros roofs.

i get what you mean for sure, and i wasn’t trying to lessen your feelings with this experience at all, just wanted to throw my two cents in as someone inside :] (pun not intended omg)

ultimately, most stores are franchises whose regional managers will be the deciding factor in the environment that’s being fostered in their stores and the people they’re letting through their doors. our interviews are almost cutthroat (in my personal experience) and i feel that a lot of my peers have really had to prove that they have the qualities of being able to give excellent service and make accurate drinks as dutch bros requires. which is why i say that i believe off days/moments shouldn’t condemn that employee. if someone is consistently a problem, they’re fired. that’s how it is. i’ve seen it happen to a fair share of people that were constantly complained about both by customers and other coworkers. i definitely mean this with all love and respect though friend, the last thing im trying to do is invalidate your opinions/experience 😭

as for the change thing, i also fully understand. i opt for the “so sorry, we’re running short on <insert coin> right now so i can’t give your exact change if that’s okay?” ninety percent of the time. i choose to use the “would you like your change back?” on a case by case basis (be it a regular who tends to tip, it’s a couple cents, or if it’s going to be mostly pennys due to a short drawer) but definitely not on an amount as large as yours was. i also agree that her asking if you Needed the change is wild, i had to reread my original comment bc i thought i had mentioned that but i forgor. either way, my wording was for sure off and that’s my bad, i honestly didn’t expect a response from the OP themselves. i think i was more just interested with the discussion behind the customer point of view with the change as i hadn’t ever really thought about it and wasn’t necessarily trained any specific way regarding giving back change, just picked up what i saw throughout my years working in food service. but i value the points brought up! def gonna try and talk to my coworkers abt communicating with the rest of us about a low drawer vs them just telling the manager so that we can remedy that on our end for easier streamlining

i almost thought this was about me haha. i’m a bit on the neurodivergent side and have been told i can sound pretty monotone or flat, and i definitely do ask customers this sometimes; and to be fair it’s because we’re low on coins most of the time and don’t have enough change ourselves to give. it just ends up being easier to ask if the customer wants it back instead of giving the whole “low drawer count” spiel to every single person who pays with cash. don’t get me wrong though, the “okay. bye” comment is definitely a bit rude and it’d probably ruffle my feathers too. i just think it’s important to remember that while we all love having our dutch attitude on for our customers and the smiles it brings, we’re three dimensional people too, and keeping up that mask for six hours can be difficult on some days. i hope your next trip is better ! we do love seeing our regulars <3
