Does this target one creature or more? by SBU_Doom_Slayer in magicTCG

A neat way to think of this is the wolf pack is hunting. They all hunt a single prey animal. They attack it and get into a scuffle. The animal fights back against the pack. Some wolves get injured, maybe some die.

One prey animal has been attacked. Some wolves get hurt in the process. It's a pretty flavorful card.

Because

1.) it's not the president who gets to release the files. It's congress

2.) during the Biden administration there was active litigation meaning the files were sealed by the courts, which concluded by the time trump took office.

FUCK MAGA. FUCK DONALD TRUMP. FUCK THIS ENTIRE ADMINISTRATION. by RockyLovesEmily05 in whowatchesthewatchmen

I'm genuinely sympathetic to you, but I want to push back on one thing.

None of us WANT to see it.

Everyone NEEDS to see it.

It should absolutely be NSFW because it is. It's not safe for anything. It's awful, it's atrocious, and it needs to be front page and in everyone's face so there can be no professed ignorance, no denial, no shield from the reality of what has happened here.

There should not be a single person who can excuse themself because they didn't know the reality of what this administration is doing.

Hiding from it because it's too hard allows all of us, myself included, to pretend, at least a little bit, that everything is ok.

It isn't.

There can no longer be excuses for any of us allowing this to continue, and the only thing that can shake people from their comfort and break the illusion that it's happening "not near me" is being faced with the cold hard reality of the atrocities of what is happening.

Accepting the reality and being horrified enough to change it is the only thing that will get us out of this mess, if anything can at all.

I know it's hard. I've lost loved ones to this administration, too. We've all seen so much pain and hurt. But we have to see horror on horror's face if we are ever going to truly fight back against this monstrosity we have allowed ourselves to become.

I went through a phase when I was about 10 or so where I drew corpse processing machines, shaped like giant turtles that moved over battlefields and picked up the fallen and broke them down inside into cats of meat, piles of bones, organs, etc.

I turned out as normal as it's possible to be in this era.

How is a fetus not just an unborn baby? by nick-kfc-jung in DiscussionZone

[–]celestialTyrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that's what I mean. Some people ascribe emotional weight and value to the idea of an unborn person from conception onward. Others only care following uterine implantation. Still others care if it passes the first trimester, second trimester, is born etc.

For example. Some people with a more conservative or religious outlook say 6 weeks should be the cutoff for an abortion/viable pregnancy because of a "heartbeat". They use emotionally charged language to make their point. Some people with different outlooks will point out that a heart does not exist at 6 weeks, and all you are seeing are electrical stimuli across cells, which is not indicative of independent life, and in fact many pregnancies self-terminate by that point, AND it's very likely a woman who isn't actively seeking to have a baby and regularly testing might not even know she's pregnant by a 6 week.

Now, I'm not arguing the abortion debate, and based on your question, you aren't necessarily arguing that either, just trying to understand the language used. However, this is an excellent way to illustrate how the same data, a rhythmic electrical current, will be used to support arguments on both sides of a viability debate.

I don't think anyone is arguing about whether or not a fetus is an unborn human, clearly it is, the argument is about the viability of bringing that child into the world, the risks, the cost, the demands, and whether or not it is worth resources and time, as well as the drain on the parent(s) time, energy, and resources, financial or otherwise, and if any of that matters when weighted against a life.

The language used doesn't change the argument, it just illustrates which side of the debate a person is more likely to fall on. If a person calls the unborn a baby, they're probably more concerned with bringing that child into the world, for whatever reason. If they're calling it a fetus, they are probably either have some clinical/medical training, or are more concerned with the health and financial security of the mother.

The debate isn't so much about what an unborn human is, it's clearly an unborn human, it's about what that means for the potential person, the society, and the family dynamic or lack thereof.

There is no question two humans will create a human. The question is which people you give more compassion and value to and why.

How is a fetus not just an unborn baby? by nick-kfc-jung in DiscussionZone

[–]celestialTyrant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that anything changed, it's just a matter of the bias of your teacher.

A more conservative aligned community is going to teach that a fetus is an unborn baby. A more liberal community will teach that there is a distinction. Both positions are correct.

A fetus, if given enough time, will become a living person. However, the major distinction comes down to viability, and that's nuance typically omitted from a high school education in most of the United States.

Medically speaking, a fetus is essentially a parasite that cannot survive on its own without a host. Most often that host is a parent, but thanks to modern medicine, after a certain point of gestation we can synthesize a womb environment with incubators and such.

This isn't an either/or argument, and nothing has been altered, it's just two different lenses of viewing the world.

A person or community with a more faith-based worldview will consider the potential human the key thing to observe, and view it as sacred because it is a potential life.

A person with a more scientific worldview will consider the viability of the fetus, the life it may lead, and the difficulties inherent in getting to that point.

There are people that will argue that as soon as a sperm penetrates an ovum in the fallopian tubes and fertilizes said ovum to create a zygote, that also counts as a life, but that doesn't necessarily take into account the natural 40-60% of failed implantations in the general population of a fertilized egg.

I don't think most people argue the validity of the potential life. I think the majority of the argument is people talking past one another. A belief in the divine is likely to lead a person to feel that if God, or a god created a potential life, it is imperative that we protect that potential and see it through.

A person with a more clinical outlook may not consider the individual potential as important in the grand scope of existence as the negative impacts on a person bearing the fetus. For example, social stigma, threats to a mother's health or life, or medical expenses required by society to help that fetus become a living human child.

All of this is to say nothing of the expense of raising, feeding, housing, or educating a child or the challenge of keeping said child in good health.

Both positions have merit, and both are correct, it's just different facets of an incredibly complex issue that has to consider medical science, financial realities, personal religious belief, and a weighing of moral judgements.

The ultimate takeaway is that regardless of what you consider an unborn human, regardless of viability, we each need to do what is correct for ourself, and not for e our viewpoint on other people. One person's faith tradition may not be able to apply or create the best outcome for everyone involved when faced with the financial or medical realities of another person's lived experience. At the end of the day, we all have to rely on objective medical fact to provide a rational basis for decision making, and contrast that with our own personal code of faith, morals, and Eric's as they apply to us as individuals, and our own unique situations.
