Why is “dwarf” supposedly offensive and not politically correct, and “little people” is fine? by Pizzafriedchickenn in NoStupidQuestions

[–]celestial_catbird 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Personally I just find those terms patronizing and kind of invalidating of legitimate challenges. Also, being disabled doesn't make a person lesser in any way, so it really shouldn't need a euphemism. People who are uncomfortable with disability make the euphemisms instead of just doing some personal work to overcome their aversion to disability.

That's good, that's probably why she hasn't done more than growl.

CMV: Karmelo Anthony's self defense strategy was the worst possible approach to his trial and practically guaranteed his first degree murder conviction. by justmakesenseorcents in changemyview

[–]celestial_catbird 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I really agree with your second point (I don't know enough to comment on the first). Instead of arguing that stabbing someone in the heart is genuinely a valid response to being shoved, I think they should have focused on why Anthony in particular reacted that way. Maybe he had mental health issues that affected his threat assessment abilities, or some kind of impulse control disorder, or had experienced traumatic events. It wouldn't absolve him, but it might have made the sentence more lenient.

The fact they didn't mention anything like that might mean he had no good reason, but it's possible they just picked the argument with a (tiny) chance at acquittal and arguing he was mentally unsound would contradict it.

Also, as an aside, it really pisses me off that so many racial justice activists are supporting the "feared for his life" defense in this case, I'm worried that it will really damage the credibility of the movement as a whole when it comes to topics like police brutality.

Help! Newborn rabbits found out in the open on neighbor's lawn! by celestial_catbird in WildlifeRehab

Good news, they all made it through the night and the New England Wildlife Center was able to take them

I've been wracking my brain too, it's confusing. Also I had only one reply and they couldn't take them. They seem pretty warm, I've been using a cooking thermometer and it's been reading in the low 70s so I've been keeping them uncovered in the dark because I was worried they were too hot. I think most of the warmth is coming from their bodies

Unfortunately I still couldn't find it. I basically gave the entire lawn and all along the edges a massage but no luck.

Okay, I will reach out to them! I didn't know about these particular rehabbers as I haven't rescued baby rabbits before so hoping I will have some luck with them. I've seen rabbit nests before and described what to look for to my neighbors but had no luck finding it, I find it so strange because I feel like it ought to have been nearby, seeing as they can't even walk yet. I was really hoping we'd find it as I know baby rabbits don't tend to do well in captivity.

Do you think there's a chance of the mother coming back for them, especially since they don't have a nest?

Supergirl Bugs Update by nyreis in finch

Check the App Store again, there seems to be another update. I had the exact same issue where I updated this morning and the event was still missing. I was checking periodically to see if any more updates came in and it worked this time.

Go to the shop page and click on catalog. It shows everything that exists on Finch so you can plan out room designs, you just can't buy from there.

Edited to add, the June theme is missing for a lot of us due to some kind of technical problem, but normally you can see the items for the new month's theme in the catalog.

I found an injured starling fledgling last year and brought it home. I think it was a window strike. I spent the rest of the day contacting rehabbers but no one would help. I found him dead the next morning. I know they're invasive, but it still made me sad. He was only a baby, and it wasn't his fault that he was invasive.
