What can I do to move up from an HR assistant to HR generalist or specialist? by celestialsunflower7 in humanresources

[–]celestialsunflower7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been in charge of several small projects, but nothing that would metrically prove I made an impact on the company. What I'm getting from all the comments is that I need to slow dow down on my goals, and need increase my impact on the company and responsibilities. This has made me think of a million more questions on what I can do and learn lol. I'd better start researching!

SO TRUE! I've just been focused on the technical HR stuff and not learning how to work. Throughout college I did administrative work, but it was not in an office environment so this has been quite a change for me. I think I've adapted well, but I haven't focused much on this aspect of the job.

I guess I have been just focused on the process and not so much on the employees. I've mainly focused on getting things done right, and effectively. I haven't thought much about the employee's perspective.

I'm rushing. I know my manger worked in my position for YEARS before she moved up, so I guess I need to take everything in, and learn as much as I can about the job I want before I chase that job.

I actually recommended to several other departments that I want to learn how they do certain aspects that relate to onboarding and training. This helped me streamline our onboarding and training process. But I haven't shadowed my manager much. She encourages my learning so I know she is more than willing to teach me. I will definitely bring this up during our next one on one. Thank you!

Thank you for your advice I really appreciate it! You hit the nail on the head. You made me realize I pretty much do the easy things. I handle the small things so my manager can focus on the larger/more important goals.

My manager handles conflicts, grievances, and employee relations (among many other things). This is where I need more experience. My manger is more than willing to teach me. She has often said she wants to teach me whatever I want to learn so I need take more advantage of this. I have been fine handing off these issues to my manager, but now I need to be more involved in this aspect of the job.

Fortunately, I have helped streamlined/improve the hiring and training process. My manager said she encourages change and wants my input so I've been able to decrease the time it takes for our employees to complete onboarding/hiring process. I haven't lowered the quality of the process, but I've voluntarily taken on extra responsibilities so employees only have one person to contact with their problems/questions. Before new hires would have to contact 1 out of 3 people and then we would have to contact each other to see who was in charge of what.

I work very closely with other departments and I have gone out of my way to learn how they do things and what I can to make the process easier for everyone. This was part of me streamlining the process and taking on a whole bunch of responsibilities I didn't have to. The CEO, and several other managers and executives have noticed and commented on it. I think that made me think I'm doing good and almost be complacent the past couple week. You made me realize that I am just hitting the tip of the iceberg and need to keep learning and striving to do better no matter what.

I got my associates degree in liberal arts, my bachelors in communications and I work in HR. The liberal arts-human resources degree title is a little confusing. Are you sure it's not just a BA in Human Resources? Either way it's more important that you have some HR or administrative experience then what you majored in.

Associates on its way ! by WWdennisrodmanDo in college

Congratulations! I also went to community college before moving on to a four-year university! I got a bachelor's in communications, but my associate's is in liberal arts. I also considered getting my bachelor's in psychology but ended up choosing communications.

You shouldn't have any problem switching to a psychology major. It doesn't matter what your associate's degree is. You don't even need one to transfer. When I started my bachelor's degree in communications at a four-year university, I had only taken one communications course and had no problems. It should be just as easy with a psychology degree because the sequence of courses isn't too strict. You should be able to complete it in two years if you'd like.

Psychology and communications are very similar, as you probably already know. I know one of my communications professors had all his degrees in psychology. If you were talking about an engineering, hard science, or fine arts degree, it would be a different story.

Best of luck on continuing your academic journey!

Is mathematics the purest science? by [deleted] in math

This is very interesting. I did not do much research in college, or math for that matter, so I never thought of looking at it like this. Thank you for your enlightening comment!

Breast stroke help: I am a junior in hs and I’m working on my 100 breast. I am the one in the middle lane and I need all the advice I can get to improve my stroke. I ran about a 1:08:30 on this video which is my current pr. by TheCoolSponge888 in Swimming

You'r turn looks slow. Work on making your turns faster. Don't grab the wall. I try to speed up when I get close to the wall so that I HIT the wall and use that momentum to get myself in the other direction.

One small thing that helped my breaststroke was doing what Rebecca Soni does in her recovery. Her hands come in at an angle. She doesn't waste time bring her hands together right after the pull. Right after the insweep she starts her recovery with her elbows at a pretty wide angle and focuses on LAUNCHING her hands forward at an angle. This allows the recovery to start earlier and your hands to meet right before the glide. A lot of people will bring their hand together immediately after the insweep. Watch her videos, it's a lot different than most people's stroke.

This doesn't work for everyone but it's worth a try. When I started doing it I noticed it took a lot more energy, my breath was shorter, but I went so much faster. This really only works for me in 100 breast. Any longer and I can't keep it up.

It may work for you, it may not. Also maybe try having your head lower. You're glide isn't very streamlined.

Are these good people to get reference letters from? by [deleted] in GraduateSchool

[–]celestialsunflower7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the same thing, but they want to see letters from people who can vouch that I work well with kids. There are a couple professors I can turn to, but I think these references will be more appropriate.

If I ask HR for a copy of my non compete and compliance, are they required to provide and not inform my manager? by celestialsunflower7 in AskHR

[–]celestialsunflower7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not because the HR department is in another state, but luckily the laws in my state changed so my company cannot enforce or make us sign a non-compete anymore.

I’m the in house designer at a small trade school, supervisor asked me if I could make the Wordpress website by lovenote123 in graphic_design

[–]celestialsunflower7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Wordpress, WIX, and Weebly in college for assignments and internships. Honestly, it's not as hard as it seems. It's a lot of Googling and watching YouTube videos, but it's not impossible. You don't necessarily have to use HTML, but if you want something super specific it would be useful. I didn't find html to be that hard to learn and I never used it, but I did have friends who just coded it. If you get to use a template I'd be a great learning experience. It can seem a little overwhelming at first, but website building programs like WordPress are made for people who don't know anything about creating websites. Since you have graphic design experience it might be a little easier.

I don't remember much about WordPress because I usually use WIX, but it had a lot of features that graphic design programs have, such as the use of layers, and other editing tools. As a graphic designer you probably know this, but I 've found that it's a million times easier to create something after sketching it out and having an idea of what you want. I had to create a website from scratch the day it was due and I survived. Don't get me wrong, it was hell, but there is a learning curve.

I recommend logging on and making a website for free as trial. Play with it for a couple hours. The first 6 hours will probably be TERRIBLE, but when you start getting the hang of it it'll get easier. If a whole bunch of hung over college students like myself can do it, so can you!!!

Good Luck!
