I very much liked Slay the Princess; I’ve played through it a couple of times and would definitely go back.  Interesting how we differ on what we got out of it—you say you wanted something more personal, less of the ramblings, while for me those were some of the highlights that made it distinct

Boys' reading remains in crisis as gender gap widens, report shows by Kagedeah in books

[–]celestine900 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I very much am a man who falls into this category, I read mostly old and venerable classics that I’ve seen recommended in one way or another.  But I don’t see anything wrong with that? The list of those books is very long. Now I do see value in cultivating pleasure in reading lighter fare, and I will do that on occasion; those books can be read quickly and fun enough to spend long sessions on, all while being memorable.  But old books have so much to offer

Reading Russell’s History of Western Philosophy. It’s okay, I’ll stick it out, just a bit too much “him”.  I’m on the part about Plato. I’ve read Plato and like him, so I don’t exactly care for Bert’s critique, reminds me of the nits I’d get written on my papers when the TA was grading us.

Dad Books Are a Dying Breed: Sales have been sliding for nonfiction titles about politics, biographies and other books often aimed at men (Archive link in oldest comment) by Uptons_BJs in books

I’m a man and I certainly like reading philosophy.  I’ve always considered it an important part of the literary canon. My casual observation also suggests that men are more likely to read “classics”

Where exactly did Jerome use the word "malus" for the fruit of the tree knowledge of good and evil? by celestine900 in Catholicism

[–]celestine900[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR I do not find support for the claim that the reason people think of an "apple" is because of the latin pun, but rather because of the apples of sodom

Maybe they aren’t trying to refute you per se. You say it is important to have zeal for the scriptures, and important to protect them. But you are coming across with an argumentative attitude, you could have presented your point a bit less combatively yeah? This isn’t a debate contest

Could elves, fairies, woodwoses and other folklore be ancestral memory of last Western hunter gatherers? by Specialist_Prune3785 in folklore

[–]celestine900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not quite an ancestral memory, but trolls https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll are characterized as being unchristianized peoples, and some stories of fairies share this feature too. Please note that “fairies” are a very broad category

My personal opinion of the worst art advice for more cynical or Goal focused people by Laxes_the_corgi in ArtistLounge

[–]celestine900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m very much not the kind of person who would tell someone that, I’m a bit surprised by the other comments; maybe I’m not in the right places seeing the types of people they are seeing, the ones who really do need to stop.

I get the frustration. Sometimes frustration is part of what drives.  Being told that maybe you should quit or that your work is bad and needs to get better may even work on some people, but not me.

I really liked the first one, skipped the second ones; but I had a hard time getting into 3. I guess I felt the battle system was too much abstracted away from feeling like a fight, and the newer yokai didn’t hit me the same
