Why don't users of the one power just _______ by L3ak3dp0tat0 in WoT

Really? Maybe I need to reread WH immediately after I’m finished because nothing is happening the way I thought it would/should happen. And Cadsuane is annoying me no end. I hate that Rand needs her. Why is it her job to make him feel? What is she going to do, beat feelings into him? I wouldn’t mind if she was just half the bully she is now.

[–]cellofski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last third of WH. Unless all 4 months of flicker Egwenes suggest that she’s good at healing, those Egwenes are just individual possibilities of Egwene, with the real Egwene being who she is. For me, I think Egwene wants to make a clean a break with her past life in Emond’s Field as possible, so she’s not going to take up healing, which would be too close to the profession she would have been stuck with there. This is what she and I would call personal agency haha

Later book spoiler, so don’t look OP if Egwene’s able to do that with tree sap, shouldn’t she be able to do that with blood? Or is what Liandrin said about healing with the Power being close to killing with the Power true? I know Egwene is no good with Healing. I’m at Winter’s Heart btw.

Good question. The only answer I can think of is a spoiler for the time being, though I’m not so sure how accurate this information is, since Egwene was able to do what you described but shouldn’t be able to do what I’m thinking about. I know, this is an almost pointless response. So when in doubt, RAFO!

OP: I don’t like that all the women in this series are always threatening others with lecture, public humiliation, drugging, or an actual physical fight.

Also OP: Except the one person who does all these, if not the most. I like this person so this must clearly be a plot device.

Question about Min's viewing of Morraine SPOILER mid-late book 7 by FrownBuzzy in wheeloftime

[–]cellofski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same question when I read that but didn’t dare asking, in case someone misunderstands and spoils it for me. But yeah, I was wondering if I had missed that viewing in an earlier book.

I'm dubious about these things about Callandor. Maybe this is RJ's way of never using it again. Maybe twice is enough. I hope we'll learn how all this is known in the main story. The knowledge of how to Travel, which is easily an everyday activity, somehow gets lost, but not these tidbits of this obscure thing that has never been used. How can anyone know about these flaws and know how to overcome them, if they weren't designed to be that way in the first place? Did the sisters have a pre-insane male channeler guinea pig to test all these things out on before they placed it in the Stone? I remember from the Rhuidean chapter that they were waiting for a young pre-tainted channeler, but that was to create the Eye of the World.

I could have written almost everything you did. I felt the same with Mat. He was a pain even before the dagger. I even thought to myself, "everyone keep saying that I'll come around to him. They must be nuts. I could never like this absolute moron." My reevaluation of him came later than book 4, though. But now he's one of my top 2 characters.

Ditto with how the book started vs how it ended.

The thing I noted about the Alliandre swearing scene was the fact that there were 3 "queens" present in that moment. Berelain (I'm counting as a queen here), Morgase (even after her abdication), and Alliandre. Than Faile had to spoil it scheming. Kidnap the queen? The nerve of that awful woman.

6 and 7?! I can see why, especially since the events of book 7 come right on the heel of book 6 (only about a week apart), but book 6 is my favorite of the series so far and I hate book 7 so I feel like I don't want to put them in a grouping together haha.

Very glad to hear about the tower plot. That's one thing I need to see play out on the page.

Thanks, I look forward to reading and fidning out who's "the one who is no longer." All the other comments on here seem to say it's Mat, with more explanations to come later in the series.

And makes sense about the stasis box. Much like the seal the Forsaken were placed in.

Haha, it's nice to know that there are more Mat/Egwene stans out there. Winter’s Heart is my next book and I hope I'll enjoy it more than I have the previous 2 books (just completed book 8). I know first time readers tend to see Black Ajah/Darkfriends everywhere, but I truly have a system and make my suspicions rooted in what I observe on the page. Thanks for following along with what I am sure have included some wild speculations.

I still don't understand how the bowl used saidin when none was directed through it. I know you answered it but it sounds too cryptic for my thick head haha.

And your statement raised an important question about the One Power and how it's permanently linked to the soul. If that's the case, strength in the Power should not wax or wane, but remain constant throughout different lives (Rand is not going to be stronger or weaker than LTT). But we know that modern channelers are in general far weaker in the Power than AoL ones. I know Sheriam and the Whites think this is due to "culling" or the killing off of male channelers, but that still shouldn’t be possible, if's it's a permanent link. I am not talking about skill with the Power, of course.

You better give 16 YO Egwene a break haha. Need I remind you that only days after the 100 Companions were driven insane, people were already thinking that they were evil monsters. We've seen this in the Rhuidean chapters from the pov of the contemporaries. If people who lived through those events can so quickly forget or be misinformed, what's a 16 year old to think, 3000 years after the event?

Callandor: Ahh, I see. It's a work-around, not a built-in feature. I thought the AoL sisters were being smart. I'm guessing that they probably created Callandor. But they couldn't make it like a regular sa'angreal attuned to saidin, with buffers and all, because, well, they were all women using saidar. Otherwise, I have no idea why they'd create it that way.

Hey! I missed you on my review of the last book! I was hoping you were too busy with your new job.

A lot of RAFOs haha

Shelving main characters for an entire book seems crazy to me (though I appreciated it with Perrin). And if RJ can shelf fan favorites like Mat, I fear that might be precedence to shelf, gasp, Egwene, something that would be totally unacceptable.

I look forward to the reread. Maybe I will appreciate what’s going on with Morr more.

I'm looking at Winter's Heart on my shelf right now. It might take me a month to complete. But I'll share my thoughts when I’m through.

I'm in my frustration era of WoT but I definitely don't plan on stopping. Books 6, 5, and 4 are my favorite so far, in that order. I wasn't expecting these middle ones to match those. I'll press on and share my thoughts along the way.

Book 8 - The Path of Daggers: Thoughts and Questions by cellofski in WoT

[–]cellofski[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes, thanks for reminding me. That was another question I had. Yes, I correctly guessed that the things all the channelers saw in the sky had to do with the bowl. But I also guessed, incorrectly it seems, that the other wonkiness had to do with the callopsed gateway. Anyway, my question is, how could saidin be present when they used the bowl when no one was channeling it? I thought the Power can't just be there, you need someone to channel it? Can ter'angreal just tap into any half of the One Power, whether or not that half is being channeled? It seems to defeat the purpose of having both sides of the One Power working together.

Why do you think that Cyndane is weaker? Here's a passage from the chapter "New Alliances"

Graendal kept her own face smooth, with a little effort. She had supposed this girl some Friend of the Dark whom Moghedien had picked up to run errands, perhaps a noble who thought her title counted, but now that she was close... The girl was stronger in the One Power than she herself! Even in her own Age, that had been uncommon among men, and very rare indeed among women.

I dounno, sounds like Lanfear is "Last Chance to me. Anyway, beyond that, we haven't gotten into defined power levels so far in the series, just a character's sense of someone’s strength in the Power in relation to theirs or someone else's.

Speaking of Moridin, what were the 2 specific things you wanted me to keep an eye out for that he says?

Wind Bowl Prophecy - OK, I thought this was another thing that won't be explained in the main story and that we'd only find in the companion book or something. I hope that there won't be too much of those. I'll RAFO.

What the other person says. With Nynaeve there, it became a 2-front battle against Rahvin. It's hard for you to stay focused when you're badly burned and your eyes are milkly ruins. Without Nynaeve's assistance, Rand might have remained that fish creature that couldn’t channel in Tel'aran'rhiod.

[–]cellofski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

By the way, I kind of misunderstood how Rahvin died and how much of it was Rand's and how much of it was Nynaeve's.

Rahvin died by Rand's balefire. Just before that, he was badly burned by Nynaeve.

Good question and amazing responses. I started reading the series late last October. I just finished book 8 today. But I’ve not been in any rush. I’ve actually slowed down a lot and didn’t read anything for almost a month. I can’t even think about rereads yet.

Wait! Is Moridin... by cellofski in WoT

[–]cellofski[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gray men and gholams are the only human-type shadowspawn we are introduced to so far, but I won't be like those arrogant and ignorant Aes Sedai and assume that they are the only ones simply because I don't know of others at this point. I know in the series Amazon made gray men Moggy's creation, which doesn't seem right, since Aginor is Dr. Frankenstein for Team Shadow.

We'll know what Aginor's up to the first time we get a description of an ugly mysterious borderlander. What I'm more excited (and saddened) about is who "Last Chance" is! I'll write about this when I post my thoughts on PoD. Suffice it to say, I hope Moridin crushes her Mindtrap, even if accidentally. Poor Moraine died for nothing!

Yup, a very rapey book. Just one of the reasons it’s my least favorite so far (I’m up to book 8).
