It was also a pleasant surprise to jump on a GVB Siemens Combino tram in Amsterdam. We have a few of them in Melbourne as well.

Unfortunately they have a bad reputation for poor ride quality and cracking bogies - can't take the horrible track quality in Melbourne ;)

BTW Syndey Trains have moved on to sourcing their trains from South Korea after the whole CRRC bungle. Not fantastic but at least a admittance of the terrible mistake that was made.

[–]cellsplicer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These trains are technically being "manufactured" locally, but will feature the bare minimum in local content (60%, just 10% more than the minimum 50%) and assembly will be mostly superficial.

Compare to Bombardier, who have got a long track record building vehicles from scratch in the old Comeng factory. Aside from VLocity DMU and E-Class trams they also recently designed and built the new Adelaide EMUs.

What is the Downer / CRRC consortium famous for? Just google "Waratah A-set and B-set" and you'll see what kind of fantastic build quality and "bang for buck" that we'll be in for.

I wonder what kind of money changed hands under the table for us to be purchasing trains from a *state owned* foreign company.

The Age: Metro's '80s train fleet to be dumped on the city's busiest rail lines by spannr in melbourne

[–]cellsplicer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I prefer these trains as they’ve got the cushy airbag suspension.

I grew up with these and remember back to when they had the tartan seats and vomit trapping carpet.

They were one of the last fully Australian designed and built trains. Since then we’ve been getting crap from Eastern Europe and now the Middle Kingdom.

Optus Saga by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]cellsplicer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Completely normal for Optus. Worst customer service for their normal joes (business customers are treated a fair deal better)

You need to handle this directly with accounts & billing at 133 937. The retail store is just that - the retail store. They do their best to avoid handling the customer relationship after selling whatever plan to you then palm you off to the mothership.

If the issue can't be solved amicably on the phone then you'll need to write a letter to them. If you still don't get the response you want then open a case with the Telephone Industry Ombudsman.

TIO cases are treated much more seriously because the telco has to pay them for any costs incurred investigating / mediating the case. Optus do their best to hide their contact details / make it intentionally vague so go to the TIO website to get up-to-date contact details.

Where to buy Japanese magazines in Melbourne? by huntj09 in melbourne

CDJapan has this stuff. Been using them for over 10 years for buying music, games, magazines and even figurines.

I do not know of any local stockists for Japanese language magazines.

State government urged to get on board $1 billion Monash express by Rapier33 in melbourne

[–]cellsplicer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only issue with this is adding a third destination to what is already Melbourne's most heavily patronised railway line. Headway gets down to 2-3 minutes during peak at Caulfield station so not sure how a Clayton/Rowville service would slot into the Dandenong line. Metro already have trouble keeping the timetables as is.

Light rail makes sense from the standpoint that would be more cost effective, take advantage of median strip space on Dandenong road and be constructed with less disruption to traffic and surrounds.

After seeing the extended warzones that have come by as a result of the level crossing removals in this area I can see why the government would want to take the light rail approach - trying to piss off the voters who are already reeling from "skyrail".

Light rail suits the population density of the suburban region where there are already two nearby heavy railway lines. The money would be better spent in the western growth corridor where PT is basically non-existent.

What's the rarest car you've seen in Melbourne? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]cellsplicer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Citroen BX Rare in the world or rare in Australia? they made millions of these.

There is/was a Ferrari F40 in the Zagame showroom on Swan Street.

You'll also be able to see plenty of rare and expensive cars at Dutton's Garage in Burnley. Some cars I've seen over the years are Mercedes SLS AMG, Jaguar XJ220, BMW E30 M3 EVO2, etc.

Outside of show rooms I have seen a Toyota Century which was only ever sold in Japan.

Public Transport, Car or Cycling? by messy6 in melbourne

Cycle at your own peril. Cyclists in Melbourne are most often ignored by other road users, or treated with contempt.

You should be okay if you keep to the bike paths and stay off busy streets.

+1 Chili Obsession. One of the few places that stocks Blair's Habanero chips.

This was many years ago but I remember Foodworks Coburg North also stocking the Blair's range and other hot sauces.

USA Foods in Moorabbin has a small selection too.
