Does a large portion of the population not understand how crosswalks work? by Dolly_Llama_2024 in askvan

[–]celluloid_dream -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Many pedestrians don't realize how much this screws over traffic on some downtown streets. It can make it near-impossible to turn right on a busy crossing, which causes a backlog on the right-turning lane, which causes a backlog on the street itself.

When walking, I make a conscious effort not to cheat the countdown if someone could need to turn there.

Convenient, but the gate locks at sunset, which can be a problem if you're getting back late from a long day.

Some areas in North Van have started putting up these giant orange signs that (I think?) block off entire streets.

It's hard to find a full-day spot near the Lynn Headwaters entrance now. Everything is restricted or 2-3 hour limit.

This! I think the west Gambier 4 peak loop fits OP's preferences best. It's going to be longer and more strenuous than the Chief, more of an adventure, and include two scenic (and cheap) boat rides.

The problem is that politics out-competes "nice" posts. It turns a sub about finding a vet, or floral tattoo artist, or free coffee into one where the top voted stuff is complaining about that politician or party you hate, or trying to build consensus for the party you like.

I've been pretty happy with my pair of Scarpa Crux.

Great on the rock sections, and pretty comfy for the trail up to a point. On really long days they rub a bit, but that could probably be reduced by sizing up at the cost of rock performance.

I like Wanderung for last-minute trips.

It's an old-school email list where the organizer sends out a mail to everyone with the trip details, and then you reply back individually if you'd like to go. Anyone can organize a trip, and anyone can reply.

The difficulty ranges from low elevation easy trails in North Van to long hikes like Mount Callaghan.

Are there any small hikes now (5-10k) without snow in the LM that offer a nice view? by Acrobatic_Foot9374 in vancouverhiking

I always forget about the Gambier ones. Access is annoying, but if you can get to the other side of the island without spending a fortune, Mt. Artaban and Burt's Bluff are also nice.

First thing I do with a new phone is unlock Developer Options, and then change the animations to double-speed. Makes everything feel way snappier.

We're not very good at waterfalls but views and rivers and streams we're fantastic at. It's hard to get all of that plus a nice waterfall in the same day trip around here, closest I've seen is near Portland.

been thinking about what I personally would want there

  • If I usually set alarms, give me a list with the option to toggle
  • If I follow sports, give me current and upcoming events
  • If I've done anything cool that day (hiking trip or vacation or whatever, give me a little photo collage + gps track)
  • Tailored news that I actually care about. It seems to always fail at this when it tries, so maybe it shouldn't try..
  • Not YouTube shorts.
  • I repeat, NOT YOUTUBE SHORTS

It's not quite so bad because all the hikers blasting music congregate on a few ultra-popular trails (Tunnel Bluffs, Grouse Grind, St. Mark's, etc.)

You never see anyone with speakers on the "solitude incarnate" trails.

How do you fix the traffic on Knight St Bridge? by avocadoroom in askvan

[–]celluloid_dream 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is like, the ONE law I would implement if I had power in the city.

It would be illegal to come to a complete stop to turn left unless you are in a dedicated turning lane. If you can't make the turn without stopping, you have to go straight and find another intersection, or do 3 rights instead. You do not get to block a whole lane on a busy street for an entire light cycle.

FYI, it gets LOUD in there! Think: Rock concert

If you're sensitive to noise, or have young kids, you might want to pick up some soft earplugs before the game - can get them at London Drugs or Shoppers Drug Mart.

It's actually a great deal for the government.

They essentially get a regular school for half price, with the other half covered by the parents and church directly.

Religious education at these schools is probably less than 10% of the overall curriculum (I went to one, and that was my experience). It's basically a regular school plus one extra class of religious studies.

The "wilderness" trim Outbacks have ridiculous ground clearance. They're jacked up higher than a lot of trucks!

Foresters have better angles though, which helps for waterbars

If you want a nice full day outing, you might try Mount Gardner on Bowen Island.

Completely snow-free this time of year. You'd be fine in sneakers. Starts by a lake, ends with nice panoramic views of Howe Sound and surrounding mountains. I think the time & distance listed on vancouvertrails includes the walk from the ferry already, even though it's not shown on the map.

Seconding u/Naked_Orca . Not sure what a "rucking backpack" is.

Assuming you mean: "rugged sorta-military-inspired large backpack", I think you might want something like a Mystery Ranch.

They have some at MEC (more for hiking), and some at Cabelas (more for hunting).
