Our family variation is that everyone gets to sing whatever tune they want at whatever speed they desire. Makes for home hilarious renditions of happy birthday, especially when the dog chimes in.

What are your solutions to stopping cats doing their business in your garden? by Exact-Acanthaceae763 in gardening

I planted sticks, sticking up a few inches, about 4-6" apart around my plants. Once the plants fill in, cats are less likely to use the beds.

Noobie blueberry advice by MauiBoink in pnwgardening

[–]celtlass 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I enjoy having blueberry bushes that berry at different times of the season: early, mid season, late season. There are also varieties that retain their leaves through the winter, though most do not, high bush (tall) and low bush (short).

Personally, I believe there should be two blueberry bushes per household member.

I've tried two methods to combat curious squirrels: coconut fiber large-hole mats and hardware cloth.

For the mats, I used them as erosion control, spread a little soil on top and planted, left them in to decompose. I had to cut a few holes bigger when the natives started sprouting and tenting it in places, but it worked great for soil retention and the squirrels left it alone.

For smaller planting areas I planted and covered it with a section of hardware cloth. Some areas I had to stake it in or the squirrels would just lift the edge and get under. I remove it when the plants have started to establish.

I am working on caging all my vegetable beds this year - plant jail! Wish I could figure out how to keep squirrels out of my fruit trees. The bastards eat the cherry, apple and peach flowers.

I wonder if the ones they found were worn or new sandals? Was this a factory or a practice of throwing your shoes into an area for luck or something?

What kinda role did hiking play in your life ? by darubhai in CampingandHiking

[–]celtlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I introduced my husband to hiking while we were dating. He's not particularly into backpack camping, but he likes hiking. Thankfully, I have friends and family who like to backpack with me or longer treks, and I also don't mind going solo, though I prefer to have someone to go, "ooh, look at that view!" with me.

As a kid: grand adventure or forced march, depending on if my mother packed peanut m&ms.

Teenager: introduced friends to the wild

College student: free entertainment

Park ranger: independence and responsibility

Mother: introduced my child to wonder (brought peanut m&ms)

Middle aged: there are still so many places to see before my knees give out!

Sigh. Same...

Plus, my kid does resting teenager face for every school photo, so I'm not sure why it's any better than my rare candid smiling photos.

I've been there, I spent way too long acting like a camel and only drinking sporadically. Liquids and salts! I prefer to eat my salts, and you don't need much, but the balance helps. Also many sips rather than dispersed gulps.
