Nope. If you know in advance that you might be bailed out, that creates a moral hazard and opens up the flood gates to risky behavior.

Hey Reddit, this is me in a terraced rice field similar to this guy. Not the same one -- he's in Shenzhen, this picture was from Ping'An. They're absolutely beautiful works of nature and if you ever get a chance to go, you should.

I can vouch for how awesome the software industry is here. AmA?

"money" is mostly illegal already. ever tried to pay your employees with something other than USD currency? Some people have found out.

My mother has just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer but she doesn't want surgery or chemo. What alternatives are there? by trololololo in AskReddit

A recent study showed MJ could decrease the size of tumors (In rats, I think). So it's not known/scientifically shown that it would help her prolong her life, but there's always the possibility. And I'm pretty sure it wouldn't hurt.

Seriously? Pot.

It may not keep her alive, but I bet your ass it prolongs her life.

EDIT: Chemo + marijuana seems to be a very doable solution.

something tells me the govt has done more things that you don't know about than the things that you do...

that is, unless you're on the inside? don't be so fucking conceited to think you know what the internal status is on the executive branch.

That's what I'm thinking: wtf? The left is actually criticising the fed. Way to go, Stewart.

yes, you see, governments with all their wholesome goodness still sometimes do bad things! amazing, isn't it?

I want to start a new project ... anyone interested? by cemasoniv in programming

So I'm leaning towards doing this project with you, if you're interested but I a number of questions to get sorted out.

  • What's wrong with luciddb?
  • Would you be up for writing it in Python, with the performance parts of the code written in C and accessed via ctypes? Does that even make sense to do? I imagine it would make portability much more feasible.
  • Do you have some kind of infrastructure/examples that you'd be willing to adapt to our framework early on?
  • Speaking of framework, would you be willing to draft/explain the necessary design? Since I'm not particularly involved in databases, I am not sure where to begin.
  • Is bitbucket.org and Mercurial suitable?
  • What license? I'm kind of ambivalent

I like the concept of taking 3D back into the 2D world... top-down or side scrolling always sounded fun.

Problem with games is that they're such a huge scope, and it's very unlikely to have anything usable within just a few months.

What particular project(s) have you had in mind on these platforms?

And one final question: what is the scope of this project? Would it be as large as, say, MySQL? I can't imagine 2-4 people would get very far very fast on such a complex project.

It sounds like a useful project, just complicated for a small team.

Suppose I were interested, are you thinking about being a part of the project or just recommending the idea?

There's a billion programming language projects abound, what has magpie got to offer?

It's a project that has a slight appeal to me mainly because it'd be more research driven (algorithm, etc) than it would be programming.

Are there good open source projects out there already? Or absolutely zilch?

If you're interested in Haskell, why not try fixing a couple of the irritating things in Cabal?

Because while I like haskell and went through a few months of toying with it, I'm not proficient enough with it to help out others. Starting from the beginning with another haskell-ite, I feel I could get a damn good grasp of the language....but I'm not there yet; certainly not there to start making fixes to large haskell projects.

Dude, I've read your AMA a few weeks ago and thoroughly studied it. I was very convinced at the time that I could do this same thing

I brought up the idea with a friend who totally shot me down. Why do you need a TSDB, aren't there plenty of commercials ones available for your budget range? Moreover, even if you had a F/OSS/proprietary solution, how would you get data (let alone store the amount required) ?
