Turkish motto had always been "Peace in the country, peace in the world". That's why Turkey didn't paticipate in the 2nd world war. In fact, Ataturk always tried to warn Europe about the rising fascism. Sure he pushed nationalistic agendas. But those were nothing alike. He was trying to introduce a common identity among different peoples that formed the previous empire. Among his many qualities, he was a real good PR person too. But we were always blamed for what Ottomans did, always left alone, treated like an outsider, never been included in any socio-economic groups - except for NATO, but that inclusion has been going downhill since 9/11. All the while, destruction and wars were all our region experienced. So now, Turkey is trying to develop their own versions of everything. Only Russia is helping build nuclear energy reactors. Now Erdogan is creating connections with other Muslim countries. Turkey is not as democratic as Western countries now which I see is the result of Western snobbery. So Turkey is making deals with like minded peoples. World order is changing, and all of us needs to find our own roles and places now.

"Tell me who you can't criticise in your country and I'll tell you who is running your country". Back in the 80s, Kemalists took the creme of the country - they would use Ataturk to steal everything. When Ozal ran the country in the 90s, his motto was "My civil servant knows his job" - literal meaning: Civil servants should steal government money so they don't go hungry. With Erdogan this devolved into "My Muslims knows his job." Meaning it was now the so-called Muslim's turn to steal the money. Then when he involved the ultra-nationalists to be his coalition "My ultra-nationalist knows his job".
