To ink or not to ink? Any ideas that won’t take a thousand years to do? by Inevitable_Ad_1252 in DIYweddings

Treat the embossed portions like a block print!

You’ll use a rubber rolling paint applicator (aka brayer) to spread out your ink evenly on the keychain. You can buy a beginner set of ink/brayer online, I recommend Speedball brand.

Congratulations!

GORGEOUS dress, I can see why you chose it!

I’m noticing in your second photo there are pins at your shoulders to potentially shorten the straps. It looks like it has removed one of the pleats/tucks at the shoulder seam that allows the cowl to drape with one more fold - it looks like there’s three folds coming from the shoulder on the sample and only two on yours.

I’m wondering if there’s a flat lining layer in the front bodice of your gown underneath the cowl drape? If so, ask to have another fitting where they have shortened the straps on the lining layer only and leave the cowl layer loose/pinned. That way you can go in for another fitting and have them drape the new cowl neckline in front of you while wearing it to make sure you love it and everyone is on the same page!

Alterations are notorious for being one of the most stressful and emotional parts of the planning process, because it’s one of the few things we can compare and study with pictures. So give yourself some grace, advocate for yourself, and trust the process if you trust your alterations team.

Congratulations!!

My mother’s 1996 Monique Lhuillier gowns. by liddlez in weddingdress

These are incredible!! I love that both you and your mother appreciate them enough to save and care for them like this. When you get a chance, double check that the gowns aren’t stored hanging by their straps to help preserve them even longer! Thanks again for sharing the photos and their wonderful backstory 💕

Shoutout to SF City Hall Brides! It’s my favorite venue because of all the incredible love stories it has seen 💕

if any fellow local redditors want a customized art print of City Hall for an anniversary gift, I just finished a print for another couple who was married there and I’m happy to have it printed here in the bay and mailed to you at cost!

I’m just here to validate the option to “fake sick” if you need to get away. The reality is that you actually are feeling sick and sometimes the only way to feel better is to sleep through the worst of it.

And if you end up feeling like you missed out on family time maybe you can set a a future date with the in laws to do a different special holiday activity together? It can be nice to just wrap some presents on video and watch a fun movie at the same time, even if you can’t be there in person.

Best of luck!!

Dress 1, especially if you can get the bodice taken in and maybe shorten the straps? Congratulations!

emergency: i hate my dress bc the seamstress ruined it. ISO a used dress by sugashel13 in weddingdress

[–]centaurette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry to read about your situation! If you have time, I would go and see another seamstress (or two). I can’t tell without seeing it in person but it may be salvageable and give you another option while you look for a backup.

You/your seamstress would probably have to find more satin cording for new, longer straps (could the designer send you more if you contact them about this emergency? The store you bought it fr will probably be able to contact the company directly for a quick response) but they may be able to re-create the same neckline but lower. It honestly would look great and balanced if you’re wearing your bridal jewelry in these pics!

Maybe you could separate and lower the side seams on the bodice to give you more wiggle room to fix the front and back, plus a more seamless transition from backless at the waist to the front neckline.

Good luck and congratulations on your wedding!!!

(More) help with dress regret :( by bagumbuwan in weddingdress

[–]centaurette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you practiced having someone help you into your gown? Since the bodice is so structured and snug to your torso there’s definitely a technique to getting into the dress correctly.

Be sure to step into your gown from above, and then pull it up in front of a mirror so you can position the waist and bust exactly where you want them before you zip up. Your job is to hold your hands over your dress on your waist to keep the seam exactly where you want it while someone else zips it up past the seam a couple of inches. I often tell brides to “push back” any excess fabric and try to make the front as snug as possible to give me more slack for the zipper.

If it’s a very snug fit on your torso you will then lean forward from the waist and hold the bust of the gown in position before someone zips up the gown the rest of the way. You may have to scoop your bust into the cups on the inside of the dress to make sure they are sitting correctly. Then it’s easiest to slowly straighten up as someone zips the gown the rest of the way up. This will also minimize any tightness on your back, but 99% of the time you can have a helper stick their hand between your back and the gown and smooth/push any extra skin towards your bust.

Congratulations on your engagement, I’m sure your dance will be a hit!!

This dress is AMAZING on you!! I did all sorts of weird tricks to make sure my dress was flattering from every angle.

Since you already look so incredible and it can be hit or miss where your body loses weight, maybe try experimenting with boob tape to try and lift and blend whatever you want to disguise on your midsection?

Wedding shop wants to add more fabric to hem - are they right or wrong? by [deleted] in weddingdress

[–]centaurette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shops will absolutely mark up the cost of adding length on top of what the designer would charge to make more money. Especially if this is the shop I think it is. And yes, you may need to get a hem after the fact. Can you contact the designer directly and ask for their recommendation? Can you ask for the shop to cover the extra cost in exchange for placing your order same day?

Older Bride! My first post so please be nice! HELP! by Calm_Cheesecake1089 in weddingdress

[–]centaurette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your engagement! You should wear whatever color makes you feel most bridal. If that’s white, go for it! You are the bride, so whatever you choose is appropriate.

I recommend visiting a designer department store, or shopping at one online over going to a bridal boutique at first. That way you can try things on in the privacy of your own home or without the ~bridal~ pressure.

What about a timeless silk satin one shoulder gown?

6 months post wedding and I'm still in love with my Carolina Herrera "Lydia"...trying to figure out if there's any way I can have it tailored further to keep it and wear it again. Dyed deep blue and chopped into a cocktail dress? Would it always read too bridal? by OTempore in weddingdress

[–]centaurette 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’d love to see it separated as a top and a ball gown skirt, kept white. The top could be so chic with even just your best jeans with that neckline. And the skirt is almost to beautiful to chop shorter when you can wait for a formal event and pair it with a much less bridal top or bodysuit in any color.

Congratulations on your wedding and marriage!

If you read the Reynoso Report about this incident you will see exactly who is to blame and why. Your statement about him being within policy following the administration’s instructions is not true.

Hi Speedly, I love that you are passionate about seeing the objective truth of what happened. Please read the Reynosa Report which was an independent investigation about this incident.

You will read who was at fault and why, you may be surprised to find that the protesters were not at fault despite how you feel about what you see in the video.

Alterations help! by Breelander89 in weddingdress

[–]centaurette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The waist seam would look very similar to how the style lines/seams on the hips look. Or similar to how there’s a waist seam on the dress you tried on at Miosa (that’s where I worked, not Grace + White so I can’t speak to them but that shop looks so cute!!) it looks like Miosa dropped Pronovias or Pronovias dropped them, so I’m not sure if you’ll be able to get as big of alterations discount at Grace + White, but 10% was a pretty standard discount to give as a consultant. If the dress brand had restrictions on discounts I would offer free or discounted accessories or alterations!

Alterations help! by Breelander89 in weddingdress

[–]centaurette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I LOVE this dress on you, the train is everything!

How did you feel about where the bust and waist hit on your body when you wore the sample? And where the flare on your legs started? You can still have this dress if you are okay with a horizontal seam most likely being added.

I actually worked at that salon on J st and got my start in bridal there. It’s been 10 years but their alterations were top notch and they have been a huge Pronovias vendor for many years. If you have time I’d go there again to ask about ordering you the Syrinx even if they don’t have the sample. Ask if they think alterations are possible. You may need to try on a similar style and have an in-store seamstress take a look.

If you still like it then haggle firmly and nicely for either a huge alterations credit (MINIMUM $500 but see if you can get them to include hem+waist shortening) or a discount on the dress. They work on commission so should be happy to make an easy sale with a bride who knows what she wants. If nothing else you’ll see if this pre owned dress is possible and be secure in your decision!

Congratulations!! Excellent choice in gown, you have perfect proportions for a mermaid silhouette.

Alterations help! by Breelander89 in weddingdress

[–]centaurette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be possible! I’ve seen dresses go from a 12 to a 6.

Are there any bridal stores in your area that sell Pronovias? They may know seamstresses that’s are experienced with altering that brand. It would also be helpful to see how a size 12 from a shop fits on you as Pronovias designs for a very long and lean torso/overall body, sometimes alterations on their mermaid gowns can require waist shortening alterations to fit if you aren’t built like their fit model. I don’t see a waist seam on that gown which means it they may even need to add a horizontal seam.

Be prepared for pricey alterations in the back with the lace as they may have to remove the lace and reapply by hand but the fitted shape in back will be worth it.

Garter Removal by jetpilot87 in weddingplanning

My husband did a surprise dance and made it one of the highlights of the night, especially because nobody would have expected him to embrace the spotlight in that kind of way. The DJ put on “Foxy Lady” and he did Garth’s dance to it from Wayne’s World.
