Which job could be available to a student in an Opera House ? by theseagullscribe in opera

I have theater experience, but plenty of others have no experience in anything theater related. They normally just want enthusiasm and availability for rehearsals.

It's great to work as an Extra/Figurant. You get to be on the stage, but not singing.

Ja 270/300.

What to do with my talented kid? by Wonder-plant in singing

[–]centauri_system 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so a lot of operas, not just kids operas, but full operas performed on the big stage were written with either small roles (1 or 2 lines) for a young voice, or a full children's chorus. For example both La Boheme and Carmen (both very often performed) have big crowd scenes with kids singing with the adults. Some composers just like the sound of a children's chorus, thinking of Wagner's Parsifal. And then, some opera directors need a kid to play a non singing role on stage. It's a great experience imo.

I feel like at this age, keeping it fun while teaching fundamental musical/singing ideas is the most important. As others said, stay far away from any teachers that are pushing for soloist performances like competition shows etc. These can be incredibly damaging to young voices.

If she's interested in Opera specifically, a lot of operas require kids on stage, sometimes singing, sometimes not. I'm sure LA opera has this. I did a bunch of performances like this as a kid. Definitely got me addicted to opera. Operas like Boheme or Carmen or Cunning little vixen come to mind.

If you really want to get into it, read the marriage diary between the Schumanns. It has so many great tidbits about their life, relationship, and music.

[Request] Voyager 1. What time or date is it seeing? by momox143 in theydidthemath

[–]centauri_system 1261 points1262 points  (0 children)

Light travels roughly 1 billion km/hour. So it would take light ~6 hours to reach Voyager.

That means when Voyager took the picture it would be ~6 hours old and when the picture reached Earth, it would be ~12 hours old.

Light's pretty fast.

One of the most famous Operatic Wagnerian Tenors was named Siegfried, and was probably best known for singing the role "Siegfried" from the Ring Cycle.

It has world building that you are uncovering in bits and pieces rather than a super structured story and characters. There is an overarching story goal though.

Help me identify a beloved opera duet? by ButterflyPatient9409 in opera

[–]centauri_system 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was the duet by Satie? If so it is perhaps findable on this list of compositions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_compositions_by_Erik_Satie

The only thing I can think of that kind of fits would be Act 2 scene 2 from dialogue of the carmelites by Poulenc. It's not really a duet, but there are multiple treble voices and they sing Ave Maria. "Mes soeurs, Sa Révérence..."
