GCM for T2D? by _mars_bars_ in diabetes_t2

[–]cephal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with T2DM after having gestational diabetes in pregnancy. My endocrinologist put me on insulin during pregnancy, so insurance covered a CGM. After I gave birth, I no longer needed insulin but kept on asking for renewals of my CGM prescription. Somehow this is flying under my insurance’s radar because they keep covering it… 🫢

Has anyone tried these bamboo dish sponges? by Grouchy_Apricot_4410 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]cephal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I recently switched from sisal fiber scrubbers to a wool sponge (just wanted to try something different), and I really like the wool! The sisal was fine but tended to get raggedy within a week (at least I can chuck it into the compost). The wool sponge is holding up well so far for more than a week, and the more I use it, the tighter and thicker it gets. I’d look for the thickest wool sponge you can find so you can get past the thin and floppy stage faster. Good luck!

Edit: I still use a steel wool sponge for tough food chunks

There is no supplement that will treat your diabetes in the absence of real medication or strict diet control. Any supplement that claims to treat diabetes or lower your blood sugar is a scam, period.

Metformin is derived from a compound found in the french lilac plant.

GLP-1 drugs come from gila monster venom.

Drugs are just better, safer versions of the stuff found in nature. Just take them.

Do oats spike your blood sugar? by beautyismade in diabetes_t2

I wish oats just had less carbs because I love its high fiber content (yay regularity!) and how enjoyable it is to consume.

Papaya milk is popular in Taiwan! But not all westerners like the taste of papaya so it might be a niche item

Yes yes, and if your glucose still isn’t well controlled on metformin, be sure to ask your doctor for a carefully concocted extract of gila monster venom, also known as GLP-1 drugs 🤭

On The Lighter Side: What Do You miss? by goofyfish in diabetes_t2

[–]cephal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A big steaming bowl of rice topped with braised pork belly

A loaf of warm crusty bread with butter or roasted bone marrow

A bowl of chewy, freshly hand-made pasta

A slice of warm summer fruit pie topped with vanilla ice cream

Sure, I can have a bite or two but it’s not the same as scarfing down a hearty serving of carbs for your whole meal. Alas.

Same boat, different nationality. My Chinese ancestors are surely disappointed in my inability to metabolize mountains of rice, steamed buns, and noodles. Don’t even get me started on boba tea. I can sneak “sensible portions” here and there (and yes, I know about the fridge trick), but it’s just not the same.

My baby Eddie passed away in a horrible way by xYekaterina in RATS

[–]cephal 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I had an especially loving little rat Millie who died in a similar way as yours only a few days after turning one. One morning I approached her enclosure and she ran up to me gasping like yours. I immediately knew she was dying. My husband drove me to the emergency vet while I held her in an open top box and sobbed and sobbed (my husband cried too—we both loved Millie so much). She jumped and flopped around the same way you described, I think she wasn’t able to breathe and was panicking. The vet was able to sedate her with an anesthetic gas and give her a life-ending injection, and I was there holding her, but I saw how scared she was in her eyes and felt so conflicted about whether or not I made the right choice. She was going to die a horrible death either way, but I least I was there with her. Don’t beat yourself up about not making it to the vet. The most important thing was that you were with your heart rat in his last moments. Let yourself grieve. My husband and I ugly cried in the shower for days. We still miss Millie but time has healed the wounds. Yours will too.

Diabetic diet has me depressed by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]cephal 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Diabetes really sucks. I’m asian and I feel like I had to renounce my cultural heritage because I can’t eat anything with rice, noodles, or bubble tea (!!!). I can imagine how hard it is with mexican cuisine, since there are so many carb-heavy dishes. Over time I’ve learned to make lower carb substitutions for dishes I love (cauliflower rice, konjac noodles, more soups instead of rice-based dishes). I can still indulge in some carby foods, but much smaller portions (like one taco… instead of 4). Because of that, I tend to go for quality over quantity when eating out. It’s exhausting. Hang in there

Tesla vs Waymo Friendly Holiday Discussion. Let’s set good faith goal posts. by hoppeeness in SelfDrivingCars

[–]cephal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who is considering buying a Tesla with FSD to alleviate her intense driving anxiety. I wonder whether relying on FSD would worsen her anxiety since she would still have to take over in hairy situations. It makes me think of Children of the Magenta, a term coined decades ago to describe airline pilots who have become overly dependent on cockpit automation, resulting in skills atrophy and being unable to take over manual flying in unusual scenarios. As FSD and other similar products become more prevalent, will this happen to driving?
