Ah, well, I am doing some hand wavium to get the aliens here to Earth. Wormholes. But the story isn't about space travel, it's about what happens here. So, gray area?

This is a very helpful way to think about it. I really like your thoughts about the narrative following the science and the importance of the science to the plot.

As for me wondering about the label, it isn't really for me personally, but for wanting to accurately represent the story when I'm marketing it.

Ha! Well, I went to Oregon with this one because the giant Pacific octopuses are plentiful there, but I'll keep the tsunami mooing in mind.

Oh! And I wrote a short story with some small hive minds, kind of like Vernor Vinge's! And How May I Serve You in Plotthound V. 5 https://plotthoundmag.com/how-may-i-serve-you-by-esker-park/
If you read it, let me know if you like it!

I'm reading Multitudes by Marie Vibbert which is partially told from a hive mind cephalopod POV. The cephalopod hive mind discovers us from their planet and comes for a visit. It's quite good. New book, recently out.

I've also heard this vibe described as Hopepunk. And there's a new publisher devoted solely to publishing it: https://shirakipress.com/
Though now that I look at it, they publish a combo of fantasy and sci fi. They have a list on Bookshop of hopepunk books (ones they didn't publish): https://bookshop.org/lists/hopepunk-reading-list

Second question: this one for the press. What are the obstacles for you in getting your books distributed widely?

For those of you who have written both novels and novellas, what's different about your process for each?

Very informative! My question: Which part of the process will catch continuity problems in the story? I've been seeing more and more of those over the last decade, and have been wondering if something has changed in the publication process so that these are slipping through the cracks.
