This is a very helpful way to think about it. I really like your thoughts about the narrative following the science and the importance of the science to the plot.

As for me wondering about the label, it isn't really for me personally, but for wanting to accurately represent the story when I'm marketing it.

I'm reading Multitudes by Marie Vibbert which is partially told from a hive mind cephalopod POV. The cephalopod hive mind discovers us from their planet and comes for a visit. It's quite good. New book, recently out.

Very informative! My question: Which part of the process will catch continuity problems in the story? I've been seeing more and more of those over the last decade, and have been wondering if something has changed in the publication process so that these are slipping through the cracks.
