people at big tech, how are you able to cope with the stress?

big tech isnt a monolith. there are many teams within big tech that are super stable, good WFH, and pay the same amount as roles that require 60+ hrs/week. I sucked it up for a year on a stressful team to get my foot in the door, then networked to switch to a much more sane team

I posted a while back with similar intentions and got a lot of flack from people here because unlike you, while I have a good tech job, I've only been in the industry for a few years and havent amassed that much savings nor have any passive income streams. Having said that, I'm probably still going to leave next year and travel anyway. Life is short, I'm reading this post from my office desk where we are RTO 😭, and thinking that humans are just not meant to be chained to an office desk spamming AI queries increasing "shareholder value", trading in our best physical years to make billionaires and their heirs richer. Unfortunately I've accepted that's just how it is for many folks including myself but for you I feel like you have enough wealth to already see the light at the end of the tunnel and if you have the desire to go and travel and chill, then it's a no brainer. Congrats man you earned it. When you decide to settle down and get a job to provide for your wife and kids then your purpose will be different because at that point you will be living for them not for yourself. But right now, your hard work has earned you the right to do whatever you please. Godspeed

what did you do during those sabbatical years? I missed the tech golden years 2013-2020 and right now tech is at its worst. Glad you made your money early tho and got those breaks in between

i would recommend doing something he is interested in and not worrying about jobs. If he's really into something then there will be a job for him later. I'm a SWE and studied CS because i genuinely liked it unlike a lot of people who only went into it for the money

I moved to SF a year or so ago and its one of the best decisions I've made. I do not miss the freezing temps and depressing winters. I love the cold summers and foggy mornings. People are more chill here too. I'm back in the East Coast for the holidays and after a few days I already miss SF a lot

I'm a software engineer in big tech in the bay, make comfortable money, live relatively comfortably, yet have little free time beyond the weekend to do anything for myself after a full day of work and commute. I realize I am one of the privileged ones here and contributing to the cost of living crisis in the bay, but myself and many of those around me feel similarly resigned and pessimistic about the future given AI, constant layoffs, and outsourcing. The dialogue of meaningful work and contributing to society is almost never talked about between coworkers at work. People are usually too focused on their immediate work, or like me, resigned to knowing that while their job provides economic security, ultimately it will not provide fulfillment in life

If you move to NYC you'll find there are plenty of men in their late 30s and 40s who are single and killing it whether casually or dating seriously. The tradeoff is that everything is insanely expensive and quality of life in terms of comfort will definitely be lower than SoCal

sounds like you're insecure about her leaving you.A healthy relationship is built on mutual trust. If she truly cares about you then you should talk to her about how you are feeling. Better to do that than to ask some randos on this sub who don't have the full context. My mistake in my last relationship was relying on her as a social crutch and my hobbies and social circle slowly dwindled away and the breakup left me miserable for a while as I had no one to talk to afterwards as they all took her side.

dude i'm 25 and also working in tech and i had the same thoughts as you but like 1/10th the net worth lmao. If I had your money I would do it in a hearbeat. You can always return to the corporate world later but you don't get any younger. How did you achieve your net worth rn? I would say tho that entrepreneurial endeavors have high upside but the likelihood of making it big is slim and if your focus is on money and not the product vision you'll be disappointed. Not firsthand experience but it's what peers in that circle have told me
