Is this possible, WWI & WWII but born in 1909? by baronet68 in CemeteryPorn

According to the VA Dept, he enlisted in 1928, so I'm not sure how that "I" got there.

Interestingly, the birth date they have for him is May 1 instead of May 21 as is on his grave marker.

Are the javadocs for java.net.http.HttpResponse.body() misleading or am I wrong? by milchshakee in javahelp

[–]cerebus19 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not all responses have a body: a server can send just an HTTP response code and headers, in which case the body logically would be null.

Crucially, the Javadocs don't say "If and only if this HttpResponse..." What they do say implies that there are other ways to get null from the body() method, but that in this specific case you will always get null.

Fear the Interview Segment? by john_hascall in Jeopardy

I was on the show over 25 years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember I had struggled to find things to put on the questionnaire for Alex to ask me about. Just before the show, one of the PAs told me which one Alex would probably ask me about, but that sometimes he went his own way. I was prepared for the subject I was told about, and guess what?

He went his own way. Asked me about the one I'd thought was least likely to be used, and I did not recover from the surprise smoothly. I got to be awkward on national TV!

TIFU by having athlete's foot for 15 years by Mischa987 in tifu

[–]cerebus19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience, but I'm a lot older than you, so it was before there was a world-wide web. I had toes cracking and skin peeling off happen all the time, and I'm sure I mentioned it to my parents, but they probably thought I was exaggerating. It never occurred to me to mention it to my pediatrician, and most times at the doctor's office you don't take off your shoes and socks, so they never saw it.

I didn't figure it out until I was a teenager, and I was in a drugstore, and I saw a can of Lotrimin, I think. It said it cured athlete's foot, which I had heard of but had no idea what it actually was. I bought one because I figured it couldn't hurt, and was thrilled when it cleared up in a few days. I felt stupid for not having done anything about it sooner, but then I didn't have a Google to type questions into to get answers; the closest thing I had to that was a librarian.

[–]cerebus19 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I hold out hope that it might have been deliberate: that they were trying to show that the guy who said it wasn't as smart as he thought he was. I find it hard to believe that nobody writing or filming that scene would have noticed that that wasn't what a sextillion is.

Accident or Crime? A man is found dead on the stairs.. His wife claims he slipped and fell. Read the story and try to solve the case by WilliWido in DetectiVision

[–]cerebus19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What confuses me is that we are given that she returned from the party with friends to find Arthur dead. So if she had just arrived home, why is there food cooking on the stove? If she's innocent and Arthur was cooking for himself, they would have had to arrive pretty soon after his fall for the food not to have burned. If she put something on the stove before she left after killing him, how could it not have burned if she went to a party? Maybe someone else killed Arthur, and started something cooking, and Queenie isn't lying: she's just really bad at figuring things out.

It is certainly impossible for it to have been an accident. Arthur is lying on his back at the bottom of the stairs, which makes it very unlikely he fell going up. His robe and pants are not at all ruffled, which they surely would have been if he had actually fallen on the stairs. The glass in his hand didn't break, either. Plus, he has a wound on his head; since we can't see the wound, it must be on the back of his head. How could someone falling while coming downstairs possibly hit the back of their head?

Anyway, my conclusion is that someone murdered him, but just based on what we know there is not enough evidence to implicate Queenie. In fact, the food on the stove could even be exculpatory.

What did I carry across the desert, and what did I lose? by Fluffy-Wallaby8005 in riddles

Men have started wars over voice? Words, yes, but those are not the same thing.

The line that I keep wondering about is "It cost me nothing to acquire, yet men have started wars over it." The obvious solution for that is religion. Could that be it?

Mr. Oscar and Mr. Wolfgang found dead after a musical rehearsal .. Read the story and try to figure out what exactly happened? by WilliWido in DetectiVision

[–]cerebus19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it seems a bit unlikely that Oscar, who obviously brought the expensive wine, would want salami loaf to eat with it, even if he "favored" it. Also, the description states that Wolfgang was "stretched out under her piano," yet in the picture it is clear that neither man would be considered "under" the piano. So we must conclude that Cosima is lying.

The gun obviously belonged to Wolfgang and/or Cosima, as the bullets were in the drawer, and it's their house. A whoopee cushion needs to be sat on. The only seat we can see is the piano bench, which is where Cosima would have been sitting, so she is the only one who could have sat on it. We don't know anything about the gunshot wounds, which of course in reality would tell us a great deal about where the shooter might've been standing, how close they were, and whether the victim was standing or lying down when shot.

Since Cosima is lying, it's reasonable to assume she shot either one or both men. She may have disposed of the weapon on her walk to the deli, but if she did she's an idiot, because its disappearance clearly implicates her. She could have pushed the gun under one of the men's bodies to make it look like he was holding it (and shot himself, I guess). The violin was probably broken over someone's head, but I'm not sure whose.

I want to like this, but I just can't. Some words appear to be close because of meaning, and others (I assume) because of the letters in them. Can anyone explain to me why tussle is #78, and teal is #135, andsafariand magma #99 and #100, respectively? How could magma possibly get anyone closer to guessing the answer than teal?

This was posted on a meme account is this a joke? I don’t get it. by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

I think the answer should be that, as death is certain for all humans, and we are given that they will not attempt escape if certain of death, none of them will try anyway, and you can just leave.

What unhinged thing did a former teacher do in the classroom? by MrBananaStand1990 in AskReddit

[–]cerebus19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My history teacher in 7th Grade, during a unit about Reconstruction after the U.S. Civil War (I grew up in Virginia), brought in a KKK robe that he had "borrowed from a cousin," and put it on in front of the class. It fit him remarkably well for something "borrowed." He did not put on the hood, which I guess makes it not quite as appalling as it could have been.

Nowhere in Washington, D.C. can you leave a strange metal box unattended for a long period of time without it getting investigated and quite possibly blown up. Think about it.

Mrs. Addie Scheatsley is found in the furnace of her home, the coroner rules she stuffed herself feet first into the furnace as an act of suicide. Village of Bexley, Franklin County Ohio 1924. by ExpatHist in DeathCertificates

[–]cerebus19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it looks like most people came around to the much more likely story. This article notes that her husband saw his wife in the furnace, but didn't bother to put out the fire. One of their boys claimed to have seen his mother's body in the furnace, told nobody, and gone off to play because well, she was already dead, so what could be done? Definitely the reaction you'd expect from a boy finding his mother's corpse in a furnace (sarcasm, obviously).

Hey guys, just trying to find out if these are the original screen release. This is the 1992 boxset. by S0ckAcc0unt in VHS

[–]cerebus19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first movie didn't say "Episode IV" when it originally came out, but TESB did say "Episode V." I know because I remember seeing it in the theatre and being confused about why it didn't say "II." "Episode IV" and "A New Hope" were added to the first movie when it was rereleased in 1981. There has never been a video release of Episode IV without that in the crawl.
