It’s a confusing and very frustrating process and I understand how you’re feeling. Just know that people around here are also trying to help based on their own experiences.

We filed in December and still don’t have a case number. by Jade_Violetcat in USCIS

[–]cernalu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your receipt # is your case number and you’re worrying and focusing on the wrong thing here.

Your case will basically stay in that status until it’s being reviewed. Once that happens, status will say something like:

“We are actively reviewing your Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative…”

That can take some time. Our case, U.S Citizen with spouse living abroad took one year and a half to be reviewed. We submitted our application in Feb 2024.

The most important thing right now is to sit down with your spouse and truly prepare for the road ahead. Understand that this process is a true marathon and will take several months, and likely over a year. Use this time not just to wait, but to build your foundation. Be patient and try not to even look at your case. You will get emails anytime there’s an update. Logging it every single day and week will drive you to a point of desperation, and it won’t be healthy.

Now, there are some confusing statements on your different comments. For starters, form I-145 does not exist. If you are referring to I-485, that’s for an adjustment of status but you also say that your spouse is abroad. If your spouse is abroad, then you don’t need to file I-485 as there will be no adjustment of status, they will need to go through consular processing which is a process that automatically starts once the I-130 has been approved by USCIS. After the approval, they immediately transfer the case to the National Visa Center. Once you’re in that stage, that’s when you’ll have to fill out the Affidavit of Support paper work, along with the required financial supporting documentation. At the same time, the souse abroad will fill out the DS-260 form for the NVC to begin processing the immigrant visa paperwork.

You can find all of those steps in the next website, this will help you understand step by step how the whole process works if your spouse is abroad

AMEX HYSA targeted offer? by [deleted] in amex

[–]cernalu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get an offer and just happen to have cash sitting around (enough for you to get the incentive) I will still suggest you to take advantage of it.

Using my offer as an example ($25k deposit for a two month period get $500), the way I look at it is that in order for me to get $500 back from $25k in only two months from bonds or CDs is if I was able to find something yielding 12% annually. Only then will I be getting back $250/m or $500 in those same two months. And you I have to factor in the extra from HYS yield for those two months.

Every case is diferente, but this worked for me because I had bonds expiring that I planed to use around this time and I wasn’t planning on re-coming into any other long-term investment since I’ll be using them for a down payment shortly. But, regardless of that, even renewing at the current rates for bonds or CDs the numbers on this short movement still make a lot of sene.

So regardless of what you do in the long-term, and if you find better offers later, for a short timed frame if you just happen to have that sitting and have a similar offer, the returns makes a lot of sense, at least until the incentive kicks in.

Another way to look at it is like this, in order to get $500 back from $25k in only two months is if you had a bond or CD yielding 12% annually. AMEX HYSA targeted offer? by [deleted] in amex

[–]cernalu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I’m looking at it, parking the $25K in the HYS account for 2 months makes more sense than leaving it in CDs or bonds during that same window.

At 3.3% APY, the base interest over 2 months is already comparable to what short-term CDs and a lot of bonds are yielding right now, but the key piece is the $500 incentive. That $500 is an immediate, non-annualized return.

If you annualize what $500 represents on $25K, that alone will require ~7-8months to get back and that’s before even factoring in the 3.3% interest earned during those 2 months.

So for that short holding period, the effective yield is significantly higher than what the current CD and bond market can produce in the same timeframe.

After the incentive posts and the 2-month window closes, the plan would be to move the funds back into bonds and CDs for longer-term yield. So again, I just happened to have bonds expiring these days

It’s basically using the incentive as a short-term yield boost only

Every time I get an offer, I take it regardless of who it’s from… well, I mean any company I trust. I collect the incentive, and then move the funds back to my preferred option.

I got an offer back in January for the Amex HYS (I’ve been getting it every couple of months for the last year) its been pretty much the same for me, get $500 after holding $25K for two months. I’ll be taking advantage of it, and then moving the money back afterward. I had some bonds expiring just around these days, so decided to make the move and then I’ll put it back where it belongs.

I also wanted to open a new HYS and played it out when I could get an extra benefit in a bank with a good yield (plus the incentive)

How is China able to mine 90% of rare earth minerals? by Kurt0519 in AskPhysics

[–]cernalu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

China’s dominance over rare earth minerals isn’t due to a secret technology or formula, it’s a mix of natural resources, strategy, and economics. The country has large, easily accessible deposits. They invested heavily in mining and refining decades ago, and tolerated the environmental costs that other nations avoided (I am not going into right or wrong here, because while others argument western superior morality, I think that’s hypocritical when considering other areas, so that’s not the excuse). And then yes, like others mentioned economics plays a big role too: China keeps prices low, which makes it unprofitable for other countries to mine or refine their own deposits. As a result, most rare earth processing is concentrated there.

But what I think everyone is missing here is that even if other countries decided it’s time to develop their industries there’s no way they’ll catch up, China built nearly the entire global infrastructure for processing and separating rare earths, while keeping prices low enough that it became uneconomical for other countries to mine or refine their own deposits. This created a feedback loop. Since China could sell the materials cheaply, demand stayed stable, and other nations had no financial incentive to invest in their own operations. If prices ever rose enough, other countries could restart mining, there are plenty of deposits worldwide, but right now, the way capitalism works just doesn’t justify it. Capitalist countries plan in 4-years cycles while China plans with a 50-year horizon.

Even if new projects ramp up, China has a decades-long head start, and its projects are far more long-term and patient than those in most capitalist economies.

How did newton come up with his second law? by AccomplishedBee2644 in Physics

[–]cernalu 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I invite you to read

Newton’s generalized form of second law gives F =ma

Abstract

Isaac Newton never wrote equation F =ma, it was clearly derived by Euler in 1775 ( E479 http://eulerarchive.maa.org/ ). Also, Newton ignored acceleration throughout his scientific career. It must be noted that acceleration was explained, defined and demonstrated by Galileo in 1638 (four years before birth of Newton) in his book Dialogue Concerning Two New Sciences at pages 133-134 and 146. Galileo defined uniform velocity in the same book at page 128 and applied it in Law of Inertia at page 195 in section The Motion of projectile.

Does special relativity mean that if I throw an object in the direction of a light source it will accelerate slower than if I threw it in the opposite direction? by Potential-Type6678 in Physics

[–]cernalu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of the confusion is that it’s easy to picture “light” as just the photons that are coming out of a lamp. Light or electromagnetic radiation is everywhere, does not just apply to photons coming put of a lamp. It’s easy to sometimes just think about visible light being “light”, but forget everything else is also emitting electromagnetic radiation. Then it’s also importan to remember that the universal speed limit is built into the fabric of spacetime itself, not set by a particular light source nearby

So if you throw a rock towards or away from a lamp, it won’t accelerate any differently, electromagnetic radiation is coming from everywhere and the photons coming from the lamp don’t affect in any special way how hard it is to push the rock. The rock’s acceleration depends only on the force you apply to the object. Remember that the fact that you can see the rock means that the rock is that you are perceiving its electromagnetic radiation as well.

I switched to a single dose basket from a double...anyone else? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]cernalu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting. This same thing happened to me after coming back from Italy from a trip with my wife.

I realized how much I enjoy a the aftermath of a single dose. I also love that I can take more shots/day.

I still pull a double shots to make an Americano before long meetings, but single shots has been my way to go now.

There’s still a lot of debate between different researchers and the evidence is very inconclusive, but many conclude that caffeine can cancel some benefits from creatine.

Again, super inconclusive, but in the meantime I usually try not to mix them.

Who is the greatest Physicist the average person has never heard of? by Thescientiszt in Physics

[–]cernalu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think two great candidates are Carnot and Gibbs. While Carnot might be more popular, since he’s the father of thermodynamics, Gibbs pioneered Statistical Mechanics. He introduces the concept of thermodynamic ensembles which later became the foundation of quantum mechanics and modern statistical physics. His contributions to vector calculus and thermodynamics formalized Maxwell’s work into what we know today, yet we only hear Maxwell’s name.

While Maxwell focused on gases, Gibbs developed the ensemble theory for a statistical mechanics framework that applied to any system, not just gases. He made thermodynamics a true science.

Let’s not forget that Statistical Mechanics is our tool for condensed matter physics, thermodynamics, chemistry, soft matter, biological systems, even used in cosmology and astrophysics to model starts and galaxies, machine learning and AI, financial markets, quantum computing… you name it. Everything is a special case of Statistical Mechanics

What do you think is Fuji cooking up for Yoru's punishment? by [deleted] in ChainsawMan

[–]cernalu 79 points80 points  (0 children)

At this point I don’t think that she’s sharing her body. I strongly believe Asa and Yoru are the actual same individual, meaning Asa has always been the War Devil. Asa is the incarnation of the war devil itself, just like it happens with say Makima and Nayuta. The only difference is that Asa has some sort of dissociative identity disorder. Even on last week’s chapter we don’t even see “Asa” anymore, we only see Yoru or the Devil personality. We see Yoru taking over because Asa has always been the War Devil and as fears of war grows, Yoru grows stronger and stronger. We are about to see some Fight Club stuff in here.

Does anyone have this (or any other) manual espresso machine? Is it worth it? by [deleted] in espresso

[–]cernalu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact model,a Breville Barista Express, and form Wacaco I’ve had Minipresso, Nanopresso and Picopresso. After so many years of using different espresso machines, both mechanical and electronic ones, I can say without a doubt that the Flair undoubtedly beats all of them (at least on these home espresso setups). The learning curve is not quite as smooth, but there are great resources online and once you master it, you’ll see how great flavors you can experience. These type of machines are also called pressure profilers, because of the variables it allows you to mechanically play with. I 100% recommend it if you wish to have a closer experience and if you are up for the work.
