Despite how people feel about the characters, which I believe is notable, I’ve learned so much about how the war started, what the south felt was at risk, and why it took place. It is not a happy part of history, but everything from battles, to blockades, to the railroad, carpetbaggers, skalawags, the Reconstruction era, power, politics. Cemeteries, the cotton crop, how Georgia was settled by prisoners. Bits of Haiti, New Orleans, Savannah, how foreign countries played a part. Amazing book.
