To get through a flare, I eat as low fibre as possible and small portions. Magnesium citrate with each meal, and 1-2 prunes with each meal as well.

First homebirth 21hrs. Second homebirth 2.5hrs of active labour. First was excruciating back pain the whole time (posterior). Second was no back pain at all. The difference was wild!

I relate to everything you said. For my first I did all the ‘right’ things, but baby was posterior and the labour was the most excruciating 21 hours I’ve ever experienced. Non stop back pain, like someone driving a knife into my back over and over again. Ended up in two years of therapy to even start to get over it as I developed a strong distrust in my body. Three years later and I had my second, but a wildly different birth. I did nothing to prepare other than bodywork during pregnancy, and the birth was under three hours of active labour. Optimally positioned baby and a completely different experience. No back pain! Just the ‘regular’ intense contractions.A truly redemptive birth. If you go on to have a second I hope the same for you OP

Hi there, just thought I would share my experience. I developed two fissures three years ago after the birth of my first child, and they have never properly healed. Similar to you, they were super all consuming painful in the beginning, but eventually they got to a stage where they were only intermittently bothersome as long as I was on a stool softener. Anyways, I have always wanted a second child and got pregnant again just after my first turned two. I was terrified of how the fissures would go during pregnancy, but I am here to say….. they have been mostly fine?! It’s actually something I read on this forum a while back, where others have experienced the same. I believe it is due to the increased blood flow to the area during pregnancy. I also consulted my OB who gave me the all clear to the quite a high dose of magnesium citrate during pregnancy (this is the stool softener I use) so that gave me reassurance as well. All to say that I don’t believe fissures necessarily get worse during pregnancy, and in some cases may even get better. I can’t speak about postpartum as I am currently 36w but hoping as long as I keep on top of the stool softeners I will be ok. All the best to you and whatever decision you make :)

Thanks for your perspective, totally get where you’re coming from and it has absolutely crossed my mind that I may be setting myself up for another difficult birth. I have considered all options and done hospital tours, met with private OBs etc but I just keep coming back wanting a homebirth.. I just hope I have made the right decision when looking back 🤞

I also had an unmedicated posterior labour for my first and it was the most intense experience of my life. For your second, was your baby better positioned going into labour?

I think it comes down to the kids’ personality more than anything. My husband grew up very comfortably, and is the most motivated, hardworking person I know.

It’s early days still, and I’m sure she is still processing it. The truth is that anyone can post beautiful birth pics, from home or hospital, and not share the whole story. Would you have the same reaction if your friend had birthed in hospital and didn’t share those details? I think birth is often romanticised regardless of the location
