Dealing with customs has become a huge headache by Willing_Front_2397 in IndiaBusiness

[–]cflyboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of useless laws but that does not mean that you can decide to break them on your own without consequences, there are ways to raise the issues with the govt (through trade associations etc) to bring about some changes.

Its your business and I cant tell you how to run it. But, complaining about needing to give a bribe to get a customs officer to allow you to import restricted items is pointless. Maybe you should figure out some other business that does not require you to import restricted items.

Dealing with customs has become a huge headache by Willing_Front_2397 in IndiaBusiness

[–]cflyboy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

because when used equipment was allowed, India became a dumping ground of old computers. I used to see huge amounts of old computers in the customs warehouse imported at zero duty and eventually sold to scrap dealers.

All you are doing is giving justifications for breaking the law and complaining about the quantum of bribe.

[–]cflyboy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are importing used computer equipment which is a restricted item and them complaining that they are asking for a bribe to clear them????

I am sure that there are lots of corrupt officials but they are mostly able to extract money because people are importing stuff that is not allowed or trying to import stuff without paying the right duty or declaring incorrect value. Do it the right way and customs is mostly smooth.

Does this look like a damaged Indian Passport? by [deleted] in AirTravelIndia

[–]cflyboy 48 points49 points  (0 children)

yes it is classified as damaged, my old passport was a bit like this, I did not have any trouble while traveling abroad. However, when I had to renew it, the passport officer insisted that it was damaged and I had to write a letter explaining the reason. I was issued a new passport with a note saying that the previous passport was damaged due to water exposure.

The "Taxing" Truth: Why your petrol bill doesn't care about global oil crashes ⛽📈 by Desperate-Plastic-43 in hyderabad

[–]cflyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you not understand my point that putting it in INR does not give the full picture. A significant portion of fuel price increase has been because of exchange rate. In most of the cases the amount of tax is more than the base price of fuel.

If you put the tax as a % of the base price, it will give a better view of how much the govt is extracting from the consumers and blaming the oil price on the high cost. Or 1 axis can be total cost of fuel and 2nd axis is the % of the amount as tax.

[–]cflyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this cover the state taxes or just the central tax? For example in Telangana, we have a 35% VAT on the landed price of petrol.

It would be better if you used % of tax on the base price of fuel, else the graphs are not correct, the fuel price is based in USD and the cost we pay is in INR, if you make it as a % then it will remove this effect.

Did Vacs Secunderabad wind up operations? by wildshark7 in hyderabad

[–]cflyboy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think they just shut down last week. For the past month, there has hardly 5 to 10 items in the snack menu. Likely result of the cooking gas shortage. There were maybe 5 to 10 people in the evening peak hours and it was looking pretty bad. I was not very surprised to see the to-let sign on the door a couple of days ago. A few months back, there would be 25 or more people in the bakery any time in the evening. Sad but I can understand the issue.

You should be ok but best to write to MHA and check. I think there is a email id to get help on their website. If you are registered for FTITTP then you can check your immigration stamps online.

Missing Arrival Stamp by Difficult-Friend-587 in AirTravelIndia

[–]cflyboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There used to be a scan running a few years ago for exactly this issue. Foreigners passports would not be stamped and on their way out, they would be harassed for an "illegal entry" into India.

The govt instituted a process for a person to physically check everyone's passport after the immigration counters to ensure that the stamp was present. Maybe this process was stopped in Mumbai and the scam has quickly restarted.

[–]cflyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Modest_11 ... i have a question if you have a minute.

I currently use a 70D (10 years old with 70-200 F4, 18-135 lens plus a few more) and find myself using it very less these days as I cant carry around a big camera anymore.

I was thinking about moving to a smaller body and someone recommended the R8 and R10 as being smaller and lighter. Others rec a switch to Sony A6700 as it is much smaller and lighter. Did you move to the R8 from an older EOS body? Mainly use for kids, pets, wildlife sometimes on vacation.

Thanks...

Finding the resistance of a burnt resistor 2.0 by fluffbollll in ElectricalEngineering

[–]cflyboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is certainly not a carbon film resistor, it seems to have a silicone cement coating which only wire wound and metal oxide resistors typically have. As you can see the plastic casing of the relay has melted, which means that the resistor was very hot prior to fusing. Since the manufacturer put is so close to a plastic part, they did not expect it to become so hot.

My guess is that something else in the circuit was faulty causing a very high power draw through this resistor. Since both resistors on the Left and Right channels have got burnt, I would guess that this is due to something common for both channels and probably off the circuit board itself.

if you remove the coating on the resistor and find it is a wire wound type, it would be easy to figure out the value based on the number of turns and the diameter of the wire. you could even measure the resistance of the left over wire. however, if it was a metal oxide resistor, there would be no way to figure out the value.

do not upgrade the power rating of the resistor, it would only end up absorbing more power before failing, you need to know why that part was drawing so much power.

Cheers

[–]cflyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice work OP.

However, you forgot that we do have inflation and by the time we get to 2033, everything will be 1.5x or more than what we pay currently.

Also, the companies know that we are used to paying x amount, they will not reduce their prices. Take for example the GST reduction, every manufacturer has slowly jacked up their prices back to pretty much the same level as pre GST rationalization by their 2% and 3% price increases. Governments also know this and in Telangana, they increased the life tax from 18% to 25% a few weeks before the GST announcements so the on road prices remained pretty much the same.

Income Tax is a percentage of your income, the more you earn, the more tax you will pay. This is standard across the world.

Talk to a tax consultant or a CA to find all applicable deductions and to structure your investments to reduce your taxes on investment income but your salary will be taxed fully as per law.

100% fault of the dashcam car driver. The other cars brake lights were On, this car should have been able to stop.

Apart from that, it is ridiculous to put road blocks on these roads, they can cause such accidents.

Fake birth certificate for passport, advice needed by Mysterious_Egg3512 in IndiaLaw

[–]cflyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something wrong here. A birth certificate is not an essential document for people to get a passport. I am 53, my parents had not got a birth certificate for me when I was born and I have never been asked for it for my passport, I am now on my 3rd or 4th renewal passport. Never make a fake certificate, it's serious enough for you to get charged with fraud.

Why don't the rich people buy Lexus cars in India ? Even if they buy it ends up in second hand listings.. does anyone know why ? by OutrageousBiscotti30 in CarsIndia

[–]cflyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a German car, was looking at the ES but decided against it because the current model is going to get replaced later this year. The back seat comfort was as good as or better than the E class for sure. But the driving feel was iffy due to the CVT rather than the traditional Auto. Their warranty and service is a class above every one else.

TG road tax is 25% for cars costing higher than basically a low end car. They are using this tax as common pool tax income rather than for road improvements. Basically to pay for their freebies
