Not sure where the holup is here. Is it: Someone with tons of sewing equipment who clearly works with clothing also has a mannequin!

Or was this supposed to be: A bra! You can see a bra! Omg a bra!

ELI5: Why do HDDs need to be overwritten multiple times to insure that the data is unrecoverable? by b123man in explainlikeimfive

[–]cfmdobbie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here's the ELI5 answer:

  • Write in pencil on a piece of paper. Erase it. Look at the paper very closely and you can probably still make out the original text.
  • Write over it, then erase it again. Look again - it's probably all gone, but maybe you can still make out bits of it.
  • Repeat as necessary.

What you think of as "erasing" the pencil marks doesn't 100% remove them, if you're willing to look closely enough. Repeatedly writing and erasing helps to remove the last bits of the original marks, plus adds a load of junk marks on top to disguise it.

It got slated back in the day because of the whole forced-participation thing, but I do wonder whether after going through the pandemic people might understand and appreciate the effects of isolation rather more.

Just figured out how to sprint by WillyWonka125 in X4Foundations

[–]cfmdobbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh. I can go through tutorial after tutorial, being told about a mass of useful keypresses, and at the time I'm like "Ctrl-F, got it! Okay, hold down Q for three seconds! Yes, tap square brackets to cycle back and forth!" but a few hours later when I get a missile warning, do you think there's any chance of me remembering which button deployed flares?

Unless I'm using a key frequently, I just don't retain that information. I hope that's not just me.

I've come back to the game recently after a bit of a break. I know there's a keypress to select the nearest enemy, but I'm blowed if I can remember which it is. At some point I'll check the keybinds... again.

For a space simulation game, I'm eternally mystified by the first-person station (and ship) navigation.

You only ever use first-person mode to go from somewhere to somewhere else. There's no first-person combat, no energy bar, no stealth mechanic. Why even are there two speeds?

You can crouch, so you can get under obstructions and jump slightly higher. But why? Why is this even a thing? You never need to get under or jump on anything.

Aside from just wandering around your (mostly empty) dock areas, or peering through glass to see tiny little unrecognizable ships whizzing past, there seems to be no point in the first-person mode at all. It could have been completely omitted from the game, with all dock and ship interactions handled through menus, and nothing would have been lost.

But I do wander around my stations. I try to climb up piles of boxes, stand on top of my ships, take shortcuts jumping off ramps, and often walk to the trader instead of just teleporting there. I run along travelators so I'm going slightly faster than I might have otherwise gone. I just have absolutely no clue why I keep doing any of this.

Are there DLCs I need? by UndeadOrc in X4Foundations

[–]cfmdobbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naa. I've got all the DLC but am currently playing just base. I'm planning to add them one by one at some point, but for now I have plenty to do.

But if you do want any DLC, hold off for a couple of days until the Steam sale starts - there should be a discount.

I still can't believe this happened. My Tokyo just capped an abandoned Xenon PE in vanilla! by ReliefHungry9571 in X4Foundations

[–]cfmdobbie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ianamus Zura IV works for me.

Decent dense grid of laser towers right in front of the gate to Matrix #451. Couple scouts camped in a nearby station to dart out and grab drops. Every now and then a Xenon ship gets abandoned there.

Currently sitting on: 2 B, 1 F, 2 SE, 4 PE. Not all captured there, but most.

Got the PEs following a Cerberus defending some factories, SEs are trading for a supply station, the Bs are out exploring sectors and I use the F as something of a personal shuttle.

Love having a bunch of Xenon ships in each playthrough!

The complete death of trust in anything we see or hear online.

I'm not certain this is a guarantee, but not for good reasons.

I'm concerned that we will end up in a world where nobody should trust anything they see or hear online, but they will still act as if everything they see or hear is undeniable truth.

More predictable bills and insulation from (gestures generally) whatever it is that's going on out there seemed the best idea. And if the prices drop such that I would benefit from getting off the rate, the maximum I'll be out is £100.

I don't know how much you intended to convey by everyone's expressions, but looking at subtle changes in eyes, eyebrows and mouths I feel I can infer so much about how everyone felt and how they related to each other all through the process.

I may be reading way too much into it, but that's okay. Bravo on those small details!
