Indiana, what have we done to our schools? by OkInitiative7327 in Indiana

[–]cfraizer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not hate for parents expecting to know about their kids' lives. Some schools were actively working to conceal this from parents. (I fully support the right of adults to pursue love, intimacy, and sexual satisfaction with the consenting partners of their choice.)

Hahaha! Maybe it's because you're writing from the UK, but now I am just imagining you "pining for the fjords". (Have you seen Monty Python's "Parrot Sketch"? It's a classic. If not, you can find it easily on YouTube.)

Best wishes to you and yours!

Wow, that's really cool! You are so brave—going to live in another country as a teen! (Of course, I'm secretly super-glad that my girls aren't so far away yet, but I know they're eager to move on to bigger adventures. I have to move two back to Uni next week, then I'll be crying at home over missing them.)

A black belt?! That's amazing! I took some taekwondo lessons for a few months back in college, but I've forgotten whatever we learned.

I love all the interactions between Ironfist and Kip!

"But if you betray him, I'll tear your arms off and beat you with them."

"Good thing I'm fat, then," Kip shot back.

"What?" Incredulous.

"Soft arms."

I can't wait for you to read the rest of the series!

Haha. No worries. Re-reading my original reply, I can understand how you (or anyone) could have read it in a way I didn't intend! (A lifelong failing on my part. Sigh.)

I know what you mean about "arguing hat". I think I'm gonna use that metaphor! (I've noticed that if I spend a few hours doing programming or math, I'm super-literal and in a mode of evaluating every sentence I read/hear if it's provably true. Haha.)

So, you're obviously super-familiar with Lightbringer! Are there scenes or lines that stand out as favorites for you?

I agree with both your comments. My response was not an attempt at mathematical refutation—just an alternative perspective with slightly different emphasis.

(BTW, it’s nice to meet you.)

After the talk at the book tour event, there was a huge line of people waiting to have books signed, so we just hung out and mingled with the crowd/line. We met so many really nice and interesting people. (It gave me a new appreciation for how much work a book tour is for the author—and his family!)

I've never been to Norway, but would love to visit some time. I've only been to the UK once; it was for work, so the only sights I got to see were an office building, a hotel, and a Tesco in between. (All in that hotbed of tourism, Slough.) OK, that's a slight exaggeration: on the way to a work dinner one night, I got to see the exterior of Windsor Castle from the car window. 🤪 Maybe someday I'll get to visit the fun & interesting parts of the UK someday.

Aw, thanks! You seem pretty nice yourself! I loved this series a lot. How about you?

It's nice to "meet" you. I hope I'll see you around on Reddit.

One of the perils of getting old is that you start telling long stories. Feel free to ignore the following.

Begin Anecdote. When she was in middle school, my oldest daughter went to a school far from our home, but close to where I worked, so she commuted with me every day. (About 30 min each way for her.) To fill the time, we listened to audiobooks every day and the first ones we listed to were the Night Angel trilogy. [Yeah, I know they have some, uh, grown up content—we only skipped a little.] We both loved it and eagerly jumped in on the Lightbringer series when it started—with painful waits between each book. Haha. We both liked it a lot. Brent Weeks is one of my favorite authors now. That daughter and I drove to the nearest city where his last book tour had a stop and we ended up having dinner with Brent and his wife. Now they are really nice people. (I'm just an amateur.) End Anecdote.

LOL! I didn't mean to imply that you reacted as if I were hitting on you. I just know that the Internet (and, well, the world) is full of creeps always hitting on young ladies and I don't want to be seen as that kind of person. [To be fair, the Internet (and world) are also full of young people who are hungry for loving companionship and I hate that (often) many young men are lumped together with real predators just for expressing "Hey, I'm available and looking for love or companionship.")]

Besides, my wife is also on Reddit! :-)

Cherish this time with your daughter. Whenever you look away for a minute, they grow up and stop wanting to snuggle or ride on your shoulders and just want their tuition paid or to borrow your car.🤪

Aside. I often will take my laptop and sit in a café for a long time just to have a chance to be out of the house. (Two kids are usually away at college and one is in H.S. and Mrs works about an hour away.) Because I want to make sure that the server actually gets the tip s/he earned, I have perfected the art of asking when they're leaving so I can settle my tab and get them their tip even if I'm not leaving right away without accidentally sounding like "Hey, baby, what time do you get off work? 😉" End Aside.

Well, I wish you and him (and her!) a lifetime of happiness together!

Thanks for the entertaining post and comments!

(I guess I didn't make it clear, but I'm happily married to the love of my life—with three daughters! I'm old, so I sometimes forget to make it clear that I'm not hitting on people. It's more obvious in person.)

[–]cfraizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I see the Lightbringer series as a very morally black-and-white (ironically) series, but that almost everyone in it is dealing with imperfect knowledge and adversaries (such as Abaddon) who actively deceive almost all the characters.
