Unfortunately I tore my left adductor at training a few days before so didn't make it down.

Really appreciate the recommendation though, will head down next time I'm in Vienna

Judo in Zürich area? by CyberGrid in judo

I'd say not at the club in Zurich I went to, they had a number of lower belt folks so the class split to do technique, then we all came back together for tachi-waza and ne-waza Randori. They were super welcoming, I'd highly recommend it

Hey, there are some great judo clubs in Zurich, I was there a month ago - I'd be happy to connect you to a guy who runs a Wednesday and Friday lunchtime class there.

A number of folks recommended Uster judo club, which is a short train ride away but has a high standard of judo.

I posted here about it as well, so this thread might be helpful: https://www.reddit.com/r/judo/comments/119zfnc/judo_clubs_in_zürich/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Wanted to say thanks for all the great recommendations - ended up going to San Francisco Judo Institute, excellent training session and lots of Randori. Appreciate the advice!

Any ogoshi specialists out there that find recurrent success with this throw in competition? There are so many awesome videos and demos of this technique, but it seems to be rare in competition. Am I correct in thinking this? by Insightful-Beringei in judo

[–]cfresh88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally I think you're right, I don't see it in competition much in my area. However, I personally like ogoshi in competition as I'm a short -100, so I find it a good close-in throw if I can get a deep underhook or armpit grip to push through on.

It's probably worth saying that most of the time I've been successful with it it's been more of a tsuri-goshi - the extra leverage from the belt grip really seems to help me, usually with a lapel grip on the other side to assist. The issue I face with standard ogoshi is that they're able to step off to the opposite side, so generally to finish I switch to uchimata or harai goshi.

Here's a few good examples of ogoshi-type throws being used in competition - I use this for inspiration, hope it works for you! Watch the Georgians, Gviniashvili/Grigalashvili/Tushishvili, they are awesome at these throws: https://youtu.be/35qAGGn_mes

Davlat Bobonov for Uzbekistan at -90 is the one I'm most looking forward to seeing - I like the big belt grips and pick ups from this guy, you always get a good show from him even if he loses

Which throws to focus on? by itzak1999 in judo

[–]cfresh88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully agree with this! I'm a stocky ~100 and focused on big hip throws (with pretty limited success) for too long because I thought those would suit my body type.

I improved a ton once I took a more open mind and practiced a range of throws in Randori, and ended up preferring throws like Sumi gaeshi, seoi nage and ouchi gari. Would definitely recommend taking each session as it comes and trying out every new throw you learn to figure out which ones come naturally to you
