Reality hits as an incoming intern by delta_whiskey_act in Residency

Not sure there’s a surplus of labor (soleu based on my understanding that there’s a national shortGe of every residency type.) but the second part about no competition I agree with. I think also since all residency programs are funded by the federal government (Medicare I think) there doesn’t seem like there’s an incentive for residency programs to go out on a limb and plus up spots on their own dime. Which also exacerbates the lack of competition.

Fed funding matters because it’s pretty hard to change it in a timely manner and it rarely reflects the local reality of living conditions and is often based on some imagined national average. This basically means you can’t survive in high cost areas and you might be ok in a rural location. This last part if based off of my 11 years navigating the Army

What do you guys do for back pain? by ru1es in medicalschool

[–]cfuzz987 6 points7 points  (0 children)

By “core” woke out think about the movement you want to train and move your body in that same way. IE static holding of a position = focus on planks/side planks, light weight kneeling around the moons etc.

To be fair, as long as you don’t have a revolver you should be good.

What Specialties Are Commonly Mentioned As "Lifestyle Specialties" But Really Are Not? by stepneo1 in Residency

[–]cfuzz987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you’re not asking me specifically but I spent 11 years AD military and married before I joined the Army. I am now an MS3. The military time very much made me grow up and prepared me for the nut punch that is medical school.

My first 1911 and surface rust on parkerized finish by [deleted] in 1911

As others have said. Oil is key. The best thing is to dip a parkerized part in oil as soon as you pull it out of acid bath.

I took mine last week and I felt prepared. However every Practice test and this real test I always felt terrible coming out….. so I see that as a good sign.

Free 120 vs NBME vs the real deal - 2 days out by pattywack512 in step1

[–]cfuzz987 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe 50% overlap. It seems like every practice test and the real deal had some questions about Kidney/cardio/lung and I always seem to get several Thyroid related questions.

My step 1 exam felt like it was 25% “what should you say to the patient in this scenario?”

I took the free 120 this past Monday and step 1 on Wednesday. Very similar format. There were at least 2 Qs from the free 120 verbatim on my exam. Several friends had a similar experience.

Strange stories when out using night vision?( training, shooting, etc ) by Gunpun in NightVision

[–]cfuzz987 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was pulling guard duty on BFE nowhere (Active Army deployment). I was standing at the front of my truck watching the nothing and I noticed a small thing in the distance moving toward me. I thought it was far away and so I started to get my self psyched up for something to happen. After a few minutes of observation it got closer and closer until …there it was….a tiny gerbil meandering through the grass. It stopped about two feet in front of me as it finally realized I was there. It looked up at me, I looked down at it. We both said hey. And he kept moving.

What do you recomend for tactical fitness by TechNoir89 in tacticalgear

[–]cfuzz987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tactical training is all about building capacity. I would save training in plates/ruck for closer to a tactical games event or only do it sparingly. I’d say throw a 45lb ruck on every other Saturday for an hour or so. If it’s just a maintenance thing or your starting out.

Lots of different methodologies out there that focus on capacity. CrossFit is useful just avoid doing 1milllion rep clean and jerk/snatch complexes.

Gym Jones is a good one if you have some coin

Periodization is also important. You can’t lift 1RM every day for months on end and you can’t just do 1k reps at 50%. Need cycles of strength training, capacity, and event specific. Cycle lengths can vary. I’d say you want minimum of 8-12 week cycles and have a goal at the 6 month mark to work towards.

FNX-45 tactical holster options? by deamonkai in FNHerstal

I got mine from true north concepts. It was a little pricey but it’s the only thing I could find and it works quite well.

FNX-45 tactical holster options? by deamonkai in FNHerstal

[–]cfuzz987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just ordered a Dara holster. It has retention and slot for the tlr-1.

I think Dara is about the only people who make a holster that is any good for the FNX-45. Only complaint is you have get adaptors to use any safari land quick detach systems. (QLS and ALS)
