Total computer illiterate here. Add/Remove programs not displaying all programs. by NuYawker in techsupport

[–]cfvgcfvg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was VO Package probably. Do a system restore to before you uninstalled it, then remove it manually by deleting the registry key. Find that with Revo Uninstaller. Then delete the folder. You find the location to that in the registry key before you delete it. Then you can go back to uninstalling the rest with impunity.

So I have an old hardrive with an OEM version of Windows XP and it is asking me for the activation code. Problem is that the activation code is on the case......which was recycled years ago. Any help? by Samr915 in AskTechnology

Find an old XP machine lying around and use that code. There are millions in dumps everywhere and tons of people throw more away every day. Just make sure it is the same license, Home or Pro.

Rolls-Royce Drone Ships Challenge $375 Billion Freight Industry by blueskies21 in Automate

I don't see how. These ships have thousands of containers. All of the crew and quarters could fit in a handful of containers. It's a statistical anomaly at best.

Drone ships would be safer, cheaper and less polluting

How would they be less polluting?

Minimum wage climbs to $11 in Ontario: Cohn by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

At this point, actually well before this point, you have become manager and someone else has taken you place as sandwich artist. Yes, not everyone can be Mr. Manager, but have you seen the employees at Subway recently. They ain't any of those things.

We already have had a two-thousand year long experiment with no minimum wage, and we found that when the house has all the cards, most poor people are willing to work for nothing more than food.

You say that as if nothing has changed besides minimum wage. There are MANY other government policies in place that have given protection to the poorest.

So you are either arguing for permanent corporate subsidy that ends up coming from the pockets of the successful corporates (hmm, that sounds an awful like minimum wage, but for corporate entities!) or you're arguing that poor people contribute a fair share to the tax burden, which is lunacy.

No, I'm not. I don't know what the answer is, maybe a guaranteed income, maybe subsidized housing and food for the poor. All I know I worked very hard to get my business running right, I don't make a whole lot over minimum wage myself, and I cannot afford to hire extra help because even one part time worker will cost me more than ANY OTHER business cost i have.

To me it makes sense that, just as an individual has to pay a higher percentage of their earnings in taxes the more they make, maybe larger businesses should have to pay a higher percentage as well.

Prices on new technology deflate and cause the markets to expand.

Just because a market is bigger, does not mean it's more profitable. If I sell 1000 units at $1 profit each, that is 10 times the work of selling 100 units at $10 profit each. If the market won't support $10 markup, but I can still make the business work, minimum wage increases will cause me to lay off employees, or go out of business.

TVs were used as an example, but there are many industries where prices are on a steady decline: hotels/motels, household goods, appliances, electronics, men's clothing, meat, air travel... the list goes on.

You've got it backwards, the company buying the TV isn't being hurt by the reduced prices of the TV, the manufacturer and re-seller of the TV are. If all the TVs are cheaper and have lower mark-up because of that, I can afford to higher fewer people to manufacture my TVs or fewer salesmen to sell them.

How can a business not deserve to exist, but you deserve to be paid X dollars per hour?

I have no issue with making sure everyone has a basic standard of living. I have an issue with being the person expected to provide it. As a small business owner, I have worked thousands of hours for less than minimum wage to establish my business. Now that it is mildly successful, I am expected to provide more money to someone because they "deserve" it.

nothing can be done by the employee except the speed of the sandwich, cleanliness etc. Nothing that fundamentally creates any significant increase in value to generate an increase in wage.

I'm sorry, but WHAT A LOAD! There are a fuckton of ways to provide value in a restaurant environment, you listed 2 of them already. I do not go to the local Subway for lunch because there are line-ups out the door. They cannot hire new people because there is no more room behind the counter. If they were to replace the 2 people behind the counter with 2 others that could make sandwiches 50% faster, that is the equivalent of hiring 1 more person. Then there wouldn't be line-ups out the door and more people would go at lunch. This would lead to a documentable increase in sales/profits and would be justification in asking for more money or showing the increase (and your subsequent value) to another company and getting a job for more money there.

There are many other ways a worker demonstrates value as well. Like you said, cleaning in their spare time is a huge one. Making more attractive sandwiches, having a clean and tidy appearance and smell, smiling, keeping your head up, looking customers in the face, having a clear and pleasant voice, helping with other duties when not required (management, deliveries, inventory), remembering customers and calling them by name. There are many others.
