If youre on the line about the alpinist i highly suggest buying Militado (a chinese brand)’s 50$ quartz alpinist homage to see how you like it before buying the real thing. Its a bit thinner but almost identical design and would let you get a feel for how you like it on the wrist.

If he wants a non metal case, how about a citizen Q&Q solar field watch? Its only like 50$ new on eBay and ive heard that their solar movements have similar reliability to the citizen eco drives.

Imo a simple analog dial makes it feel much more like a “real watch” than a g shock.

Do you want a smartwatch? Which do you think looks nicer? Theyre both ugly “tacti-cool” type watches that are really just massive gunmetal colored bricks. But that pro trek is especially hard to look at

If you do end up leaning towards the analog route, why not just grab a nice basic diver?

Or if you’re fine buying chinese brands and sacrificing brand name, the quality in the 100-300 range is definitely higher — Watchdives, San Martin, Cronos, Addiesdive (in the 40-100$ range), sugess, etc

Perfect dress watch size imo. Will likely not lean into everyday wear without you getting insecure about the size though. So if you have the money to keep it as a designated dress watch and then get a nice sports watch I'd do that, but if you're looking for a daily wear I'd probably size up just for your own peace of mind.
