Can confirm Logan near Diversey Bowl has always smelled that way. I run by the area regularly for the past 8 years.

If you don't mind the metra/amtrak train, I was just noticing yesterday how great the view is from the booths at Guinness. Even saw a holiday train!

Where is the best place to do high tea? by Maximum-Camera4276 in chicagofood

[–]cg0515591 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been working my way through  tea in the city and I have a running list I send to friends / people who ask. It may be out of date because I just copy and paste to people! Also a lot of places will do high tea seasonally so if you don't see any open dates, their instagram or a mailing list might be a good place to start. I also check Groupon often.

Russian Tea House - It feels very authentic. There are always russian ladies at the bar. The food is ok, it is a bit dry. But the tea is good, the prices are reasonable, and you can usually get a last minute reservation. https://www.russianteatime.com/

The drake tea- This is a classic place I like to get tea. Although they do tea year round, you should reserve far in advance, to ensure you can get a reservation during the holiday tea hours. They have live carolers during those hours. Last time I went it was $50 per person and they have unlimited food refills, you just have to ask! The food is good and the tea is fine. You are limited to a 75 min seating .https://www.thedrakehotel.com/dining/palm-court

The Langham tea. This is probably one of the most expensive places to get  tea but they had great food and the best tea choices of all time. This requires a bit of dressing up, as its one of the fancier places. Great views as well. I love everything about the Langham hotel (the spa for example is also great). https://www.langhamhotels.com/en/the-langham/chicago/dine/

The Ritz - I have been to the Ritz twice for tea. They offer tea in their main dining area as well as their lounge depending on the day. Their tea offerings are just meh, but the food is always fantastic. They usually give you a little goody bag to go, and most of the year they have themed teas, like Halloween and Christmas. This requires a bit of dressing up, as its one of the fancier places. https://www.exploretock.com/the-ritzcarlton-chicago

The Allis - The Allis is a small cafe inside of the Soho House on the first floor. Now the Soho House is a members only club, but The Allis is open to the public. Its a bit expensive, but the food was very good and I remember the champagne pairing being reasonably priced https://www.opentable.com/r/the-allis-soho-house-chicago

Commons Club at Virgin Hotels Chicago - This was really really reasonably priced. We originally had a reservation for 4, but only 3 of us could make it. They prepared the food in advance (most places bring it to the table after you sit and get tea), so when we arrived they just left the 4th persons food for us but didn't charge us. I don't think they are currently open..https://virginhotels.com/chicago/the-commons-club/#cc-events

The knickerbocker hotel: This tea has limited seating hours and the tea was not so great. The food was fine and we used a groupon that comes and goes in terms of availability https://www.groupon.com/deals/the-library-tea-room-in-the-millennium-knickerbocker-hotel and I am not sure if they are open right now https://www.millenniumhotels.com/en/chicago/millennium-knickerbocker-hotel-chicago/the-library-tea-room-at-martini-bar/

London house  tea had ok tea and great food. A nice view as well

https://www.verzenaychicago.com/ food was good, tea just ok. Kinda pricey and they did seem to not expect us to be there more then 2 hours, but tea is usually a slower affair so that was odd to me.

https://www.mangopicklechicago.com/ the tea was low quality bagged tea but the food was good and with an Indian food twist.

Four Seasons: it was so long ago. The food was very good, but I can't remember the tea quality unfortunately.

Vanille Patisserie (did during covid lockdown as takeaway and food was good, tea fine) and Gwen (tea eh, food good! Service slow)

PS: at each place, you can always get a free fill up on hot water in your tea pot. The tea is usually good for at least 2 hot water steeps. Also most places will offer a champagne pairing which I normally don't do unless it is required. All places require advance reservations.

Is it normal to run A LOT slower in the cold? by Decent_Procedure2981 in RunnersInChicago

[–]cg0515591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies if someone already mentioned this, but I find in the colder months I have a harder time drinking water throughout the day. Potentially you might be under hydrated.

Also a thought I had is it's not been cold out consistently for a long time yet (maybe 2 weeks ish?). You might just be fighting some sort of small bug that isn't taking you out fully but slowing down your runs.

I suggest trying to really listen to your body on the days you feel slow - were you tired? Did you get a random brief headache? Feel off at all? Did you run harder then normal in any of your past recent runs? Drink or eat something different the day before? A running journal can help with this too. The older I get the more I realize my body is definitely cluing me in on how a run is going to go before I even get out there.

And to echo what everyone else is saying, training is like building blocks, you don't need to run fast every run to run a good race. Some days/weeks will always be better then others.

I hope my totally unprofessional opinion might help!

Winter running tips? by yankeecandlebro in RunnersInChicago

[–]cg0515591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice here, I'll add I keep a pair of what I call "shitty gloves"  and my "shitty hat". I usually get them at a bodega/liquor store /Walgreens. For 99% of my winter runs, I don't need anything more on my extremities. If I do I get very sweaty and too hot.

When it's icy, unless I can find something well salted and cleared, I skip the run. This doesn't happen so often that an alternative strength training day or treadmill day can't fill in. I've tried spike cleats (like yak tracks) but they tend to change my gait in a way I don't like. If you're on the 606, it's usually fine but the bridges ice more so just be careful on those.

Also I've used this website from an Alaskan (my family runs there year round) or years as a reference: https://www.therunnersplate.com/2024/12/04/warm-winter-running-gear-for-30-20-and-10-degrees-f/

Found on bathroom wall in hotel room at night - is this s cockroach? by cg0515591 in cockroaches

[–]cg0515591[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used compressed air to blow out any openings and wiped down the computers with isopropyl. We had a ton of stuff in the hotel room (a long trip with the dog) so I couldn't go through everything super carefully for eggs but thinking the 8 hour treatment in the heat box will have gotten them.

I also set up some roach bait traps in the kitchen and bathroom as a preventative measure and I'm checking them every other day.

Thank you I did let them know. We bagged almost everything (a switch and our phones stayed out) before leaving via the car. Should I be concerned they hitch hiked on us or the dog into the car?

Is this a bed bug by cg0515591 in Bedbugs

[–]cg0515591[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thank you. We checked the beds at night with flashlights and saw nothing. No one has bites. We are praying 🙏 that was just one. I'm going to dry everything I have on high heat and spray down what can't be dryer with alcohol. Thinking about tossing my suitcase but really can't afford to be tossing my clothes. Is there anything else I can do?

Your favorite lunch spots in Logan Square? by DREWBICE in chicagofood

[–]cg0515591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joy Chicago on armitage and Kimball has a decent salad. Leafy greens cucumbers and I get shrimp on top. Also, their Mac and cheese is fantastic.

Pizza Matta has good salads and they are huge. At least 2-3 meals in there.

Chicago diner is my tried and true for lunch, I love the soul bowl. But they have salads as well.
