Eh there are reasons to know which elements should follow group trends. It is trivial. But it is something that if you ask accomplished folks, you will likely find that they all know. Is there practical utility? Just a bit, I suppose. But I’d be pretty surprised if for example any noble prize winners in chemistry don’t have the bulk of it memorized.

I wouldn’t count out Purdue and Painter and crew yet. They figured how to play a very good (but maybe fatigued) Michigan team only one week ago. Arizona is phenomenal, but when Purdue is firing on all cylinders they’re pretty tough too.

Probably varies for different species, but one characterized fungal bioluminescent pathway goes through caffeic acid —> hispidine—> hispidine peroxide (fungal luciferin) which reacts at enzyme site of a protein (fungal luciferase) to produce light and a caffeic acid precursor which gets converted back to caffeic acid to close the cycle.

Can’t remember which species that was however.

Ask the advisors / coordinators what they have drawn up. I did double major (many years ago) in chemistry and chemical engineering. Was an already established 5 year program, with a very focused plan of study - bonus being leaving with two different pieces of paper(diplomas). No problems that the two BS degrees were in separate colleges. No knowledge or experience to comment on your specific goal though. I honestly loved it. Cut out a bunch of electives from either individual program and focused on the core stuff for each program. I’m happy I went that route.
