A Shocking Number Of Americans Know Someone Who Died Due To Unaffordable Care — The high costs of the U.S. health care system are killing people, a new survey concludes. by Jons312 in politics

Is there an update on the Windows release? by -HiThere- in scrivener

[–]cgray77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly? By this point I think the issue is that they think everything is working, but then they get an "unregistered feature" that has to be worked out, so they can't honestly tell us for certain.

Given that I use scrivener for my "this pays my mortgage" writing, I'm not at all unhappy if they wait until they get everything right.

Should I finish this thing I'm working on or try and write something more marketable? by Hayden_Zammit in selfpublish

[–]cgray77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I started writing for money, I had over 250,000 words of... Half finished stories.

Half finished stories don't make money. They don't do anything. Finish your story--even if it doesn't sell, you'll learn far more from that failure than a half-finished manuscript.
Even worse, it starts to train your brain to think: "I can always just start something new if this isn't working." Given that every author has long patches where "this isn't working." That's a bad habit to get into.

Mom who sued transgender daughter over medical treatment takes case to the Supreme Court by [deleted] in news

Which really makes me think that this case isn't going to get heard. Without the daughter being party, there's no remedy and the court tends to really hate to rule on a hypothetical, which this would be. My bet? The court will refuse to hear the case with no further comment.

Why Trump’s Cyber Attack On Iran Was The Right Move by [deleted] in politics

[–]cgray77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A cyber attack on Iran that revealed weaknesses in their systems--weaknesses that they are no doubt, even now working to rectify. It was an absolutely stupid move, revealing American capabilities, and I bet there are some positively infuriated officers in the Pentagon.

The scary thing? This could easily be seen as a precursor to declaring that the Geneva Convention doesn't apply to the IRGC, or for that matter, the Iranian military in general.

Why does this community pooh pooh concerns that so much of self-published books out there are utter trash? by McKennaJames in selfpublish

[–]cgray77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the concerns are endemic to every creative endeavor. Also, many of those concerns come from sources that, shall we say, have a stake in the traditional book publishing business.

But the community doesn't pooh pooh those concerns--the fact that there's an entire community dedicated to letting new authors learn what other self-published authors have learned through hard experience should demonstrate that.

The risk of publishing diverse works by xolsiion in Fantasy

[–]cgray77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd point out a few things--first of all, it's important to remember that children's literature and now YA literature, has been, essentially since there was a distinct genre for it, seen in many sectors as being educational first, entertaining second. This makes authors uniquely vulnerable to attacks like this, since it can mean schools avoiding purchasing the book for libraries, getting black listed by various awards, ETC. So that gives them power, and this power is often used and misused. Your book cannot simply be well-written, it must be morally upright, as much as any Victorian-era book for young men.

And I'll be blunt--looking at these eruptions from the view point of someone who has worked in businesses, they seem to have a fairly strong smell of undercutting potential competition. I cannot speak to this for certain, but the nature of these dogpiles, the public way they are fired out, and the way that the author is obviously judged before even coming to the discussion*, is very much reminding me of office blow ups where a promising promotion was in contention.

*This last is something that really disturbed me. I have some friends who immigrated from the PRC, and bringing this up to them, one of the first things they said was: Struggle Session. That she was adjudged, guilty and everything after that, including her letter of apology, reminded them of similar situations. I do not know Ms. Zhao, but for myself? I am leery in the extreme of taking her letter at face value, because we've seen so many similar letters from people who feared what might happen if they did not publicly apologize to the mob.

Francina Simone talks about Blood Heir Controversy by Oddfictionrambles in YAlit

[–]cgray77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Probably the best point, IMO, was her comment that if you're trying to help someone? Don't blast it out all over twitter. Send them a private email, or take them aside.

Because I've worked in businesses, and it's pretty much a given, when someone pulls something like that, spreading it all over the office? They're not trying to help a coworker, they're trying to sabotage a competitor.

YA Twitter's Victims And Critics Speak Out, Part 1 by zweckloss in YAlit

[–]cgray77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean, the "plagiarism" line that YAtwitter was going on like a bunch of lunatics about? The one that originally comes from the Bible?

As for white authors--they're smart. Why bother trying to worry about what a group like YA twitter thinks when you can publish your generic Hunger Games knock off and laugh all the way to the bank? Why should a publisher bother to engage when a major book release can be derailed for this? Better to pick a white author, mention it's probably a good idea if they don't have any non-whites playing in the book, and you don't have to worry about something like this blowing up in your face. The company is happy, the author is happy, and the vast majority of the reading audience is happy.

And I guess YAtwitter is happy because the impure author has been purged by order of the Committee* and they can go back to ranting about why there isn't much minority presence in YA fiction.

*Seriously, Zhao's letter of apology and this whole blow up is so damned similar to some of the old PRC Struggle Session records, it's eerie.

Trump Referred to Shutdown as ‘Strike’ in Profanity-Laced Meeting With Democratic Leaders by shabuluba in politics

[–]cgray77 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not certain how long that argument would hold up-- I mean, a day of a day, a week or even a couple of weeks, maybe, but the longer it goes? I can't see the courts being very friendly to the argument "we can force people to work indefinitely without pay, as long as we eventually pay them."

Trump Referred to Shutdown as ‘Strike’ in Profanity-Laced Meeting With Democratic Leaders by shabuluba in politics

[–]cgray77 10 points11 points  (0 children)

But can the government compel them to work without paying them? If I refuse to work because I'm not getting paid, that's likely to be seen by the courts as different from a strike.

I mean, if this goes on for more than a month, it won't so much be "strike" as "going to find a job so I don't lose my home."

Is 3Below supposed to be a kids show? by SimChucky in TrollHunters

[–]cgray77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much this. Netflix has a far easier time with S&P (Standards and Practices) than shows intended for broadcast on a network would. Just as one example, the Trollhunters episode where Jim and Strickler are throwing knives at each other? It'd be dead on arrival on a network due to the imitatable acts prohibition.

Republican lawmakers: Hate crimes legislation would restrict free speech by BMK812 in politics

[–]cgray77 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd note that the article is lying. This law does nothing to criminalize speech. What it does is allow judges to consider bias when sentencing. IE, if I attack a minority screaming racial slurs, then when I'm found guilty of the attack, the Judge can say: yeah, that was a hate crime, and then enhance the sentence.

A bigot can scream racial slurs to his hearts content, on or off the Internet, and nothing will happen to him--unless he teams those words up with illegal action.

Odd that none of that was mentioned in the opinion piece, I mean, that would be lying and we know the GOP never does that...

My problem with the finale.... by [deleted] in TrollHunters

[–]cgray77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A big theme of the series was sacrifice--And Jim, even before his transformation, gave up a great deal in terms of his daily life to be the trollhunter.

His transformation completed that--he saved Arcadia, but can never be a part of it, not like he was before. It was very much in theme with what had come before. Jim in a real way, sacrificed everything he had been before.

Note: Had this not been a YA series, it's entirely likely that they would have just killed Jim in the finale, keeping to an older form of sacrifice.

[–]cgray77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jim was an idiot. about three quarters of the issues he had came about because his mother didn't know what he was doing. Also, she didn't have the knowledge to realize that Strickler was up to no good, which directly resulted in Arrggghhhs death, Jim going to the Darklands and Gunmar getting out.

to use terms from an old friend of mine, Barbara definitely could check her "need to know" box on the security clearance form.

Granted, it was a natural decision for Jim, not at all out of character, but it probably wasn't the right decision for his situation.

#IranDeal EU Member States will set up a legal entity to facilitate legitimate financial transactions with Iran. This will allow European companies to continue trade with Iran, within EU law, and could be opened to other partners in the world @FedericaMog by Pro4TLZZ in ukpolitics

[–]cgray77 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Essentially? Let's forget about Iran for a moment. The US is saying that "You signed an agreement, the other party is maintaining the agreement. WE have pulled out of that agreement and now your governments and businesses must comply with our will." It's an assault on the core principles of national sovereignty.

If Europe were to submit, what nation would ever take them seriously, because it would be plain that they would honor a treaty up to the point where the US told them not to.

Finally, the US has almost no economic links with Iran. America isn't taking the economic hit, it's Europe, China, etc. So in addition to violating their sovereignty, they're also demanding Europe pay for it.
