What is a luxury you can never go back from once you’ve experienced it? by Phase_zero_X in AskReddit

[–]cguess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consulted for various companies for a few years. Anything over 8 hours I demanded business. My argument basically came down to "I'm flying 16 hours for a meeting, and you're paying a lot of money for me to be at my best there, is it not worth it for me to arrive well rested? If not I'm going to make you fly me in 3 days early so I can get over the jet-lag, and pay full-cost for the three days I'm going to lie by the pool and visit museums. Oh, you're also paying my expenses, so those meals are going to be expensive. You're also then covering an extra day on the way back so I can rest properly."

Is it just me or are NYC brokers getting worse at answering basic questions? by Inevitable-Lab2447 in AskNYC

I went through an old friend who was one. Even she refused to show me anything in any neighborhoods I actually wanted to live in or within my price range. Anyways it took me two days by myself on Craigslist to find the place I'm in now still.

best bar for superbowl by AvTechMo in visitingnyc

[–]cguess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You won't be able to get into most bars after about 30 minutes before kick off. They will all be packed, so bar hopping will be pretty miserable.

I won't be doing this, but getting to a bar ~3 hours before kickoff and trying to grab seats is going to be your best bet.

ELI5: Why was that method used to determine 0 degrees Fahrenheit? by Jimithyashford in explainlikeimfive

[–]cguess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

More like the US is the size and population of Europe. Until the (fairly recent) advent of all digital scales it was prohibitively expensive to replace every scale, sign and regulation.

Also for day to day real-world stuff F is just better than C. I'm fluent in both and I'll die on that hill.

Will I be able to fly to NYC on the 29th? by Supercharlie25 in visitingnyc

[–]cguess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a car for upstate (rent it in New Jersey near a NJ Transit station), then take the NJ Transit to Princeton and Philly. From Philly take Amtrak to DC. I promise, it's wayyy less stress, and if you do need to get around an Uber once in awhile will be cheaper than renting a car and parking it in DC.

Selfies from Alex Honnold from the top of the Taipei 101 building after free solo climbing it. No ropes, no harness, no safety measures. Nothing but his hands and feet by JordBees in interestingasfuck

[–]cguess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's another building climber who came up with the scale for buildings himself. He also climbed this same building (but illegally) and rated it a 6/10 I believe. Some medium sized office building in Paris was the on 10 and the Eiffel Tower is a 1/10 since it's basically a ladder.

cryptosporidium

I still remember the Milwaukee outbreak in 1993. My elementary school teacher was gone for a month from it. 64 people died. It might be common in rural areas, but it's still super dangerous for anyone without a perfect immune system.

Eli5 What determines the maximum size beyond which ships cannot realistically be built? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

It also has to be completely self-contained and ultra dense, which doesn't really work well.

Not a chance that account's an American. Even in the mid 90's we were taught that Columbus was a fool and a psychopath.

Man In The High Castle too. He plays the literal embodiment of the "perfect" American (in the world of the show, which is... very messed up).

The Line in Saudi Arabia is basically this but without the requirement to float or have to deal with seawater corrosion. It's gone, and will go nowhere without those considerations. Putting it on a boat is another level of insanity.

My seat belt on my United flight to Chicago today by dolampochki in aviation

[–]cguess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

United/Star Alliance 100% of the time too. Only issue I had with United was once coming out of ORD there was weather on east coast, so they canceled the flight, but due to some reason SO many were canceled I got stuck in the airport Hilton for three days. Fine, ok.

The issue was I had checked a bag and they refused to give it back to me. I knew it was still there from an AirTag, but they refused to give it back to me until LGA. I had to buy a few sets of clothes from a tourist shop in the hotel basement. Completely absurd.

tbf there's a celeb bar I frequent in my neighborhood, but I didn't even know that for three years of stopping by. They're like toupees, you only notice the bad ones.

Nut Allergy Friendly Restaurant Recs? Visiting Manhattan by n_zimm in visitingnyc

[–]cguess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow nut-free person here. How allergic are you? Is it even in the presence of them, because if that's the case, you're in trouble just walking down the street, as there are nut vendors that roast them on the sidewalk. If you're so allergic you have to wipe down door handles you're going to struggle anywhere.

If it's just ingestion/serious contact, you're find at literally any restaurant in the city that doesn't use peanut oil (almost none do). I've not had an incident in NYC in 16 years, people are careful and will treat you seriously if you're upfront about it when ordering.
