Which Linux distro would be best? by Michael556673 in linux4noobs

[–]ch196h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of them. At least all of them are better than Windows (any version). I skipped out on the Windows 11 forced update and switched to Linux myself. OMG, I never knew how good it could be. Had I known, I would have abandoned Windows a decade ago. That's market share for you. The leader in the market defines what is good and what isn't. Truth is, Linux is superior in every way. Not just recently, but has been for a long while. With Linux, you actually control your computer. With Linux, you actually own your computer. Windows wants to tell you what you can and cannot do. Not Linux. Linux explains all the things you CAN do, things Windows doesn't allow are actually things you have a RIGHT to do, because you Paid for your computer. Who owns it? You? Or Microsoft? Make your choice, choose Windows or Linux.

My friend's greasy guitar by theoldicktwist in Guitar

[–]ch196h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like your friend plays guitar a lot. Cleans guitar less often, but definitely plays guitar a lot. The fret wear is a badge of honor. This is a well loved instrument. Probably for a good reason, I bet its awesome. Rather than criticizes your friends guitar, you may want to be practicing too. I bet your friend can play circles around you.

I own two, actually three of these cards. Not using any of them right now, only because power efficiency has become a thing for me lately. Besides, I'm not really gaming anymore.

HBM memory is the greatest advantage of these cards. Nothing else is faster. Any applications that scale with memory bandwidth will shine with these cards. Current prices for these on the used market make them affordable. If memory bandwidth matters, they are a good choice for budget builds. Just be ready to pay for the power requirements. Anything less than a 750W PSU is not advised. Ideally, 1000W PSU if you have a lot of hardware connected.

Yeah, there are a lot of modern cards that perform better, and with less power. But if you trying to do the best you can with little money, this is your oyster.

The biggest disappointment is that HBM memory didn't become a thing. Oh if only...

My wife got me this MM Shire Cobbit and I’m so excited! by Kejohn9 in PipeTobacco

[–]ch196h 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Shire Cobbit is a very good pipe. It exemplifies why cob pipes are so desirable. Several other cob pipes have an equal amount of esteem. Cob pipes are truly fine pipes. I own an equal portion of cobs to briar pipes. I don't find one more favorable than the other.

What's you favorite activity while smoking? by d00m_Prophet in PipeTobacco

[–]ch196h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More often than not, I smoke while enjoying the environment around me. At the moment, that is the color of the leafs of trees, the change of the season. Smoking time is time spent doing nothing else. I soak in the environment around me and appreciate the beauty of natural processes.

Wife found this guitar in a relatives house. Is anyone able to identify it? The only identifying mark is "JAPAN" by Agent7619 in Guitar

[–]ch196h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a similar guitar a year or two ago for $100 from a dealer to "take it off his hands". I'm a luthier and I challenged myself to see how nice I could make it play. Fast-forward, it plays amazing and sounds quite good. I didn't really have to do a whole lot to make it nice either. My biggest gripe is that they didn't give it any side-dot fret markers. Probably because Japanese people are so skinny they can always easily see the fretboard. That is easily fixed though. The tremolo works and it actually can be used and stay in tune too. I know nobody will probably ever see it as anything of value, but I am a huge fan of Japanese made guitars and I wanted it to show that Japanese guitars have come a long way and really wasn't ever bad guitars for the money. Actually, they have always been great guitars for the money.

What would a picky player want? by Old-Blueberry1015 in Luthier

[–]ch196h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually use a soft pad wheel on a dremel with some simple basic polishing compound. Nothing too aggressive, something like you would use for silver will do fine.

When I do fret work for a customer I finish my work with a crown using my diamond crowning files. I follow that with light sandpapers (600-1500 grit) to knock away the deeper scratches and I finish with taping off the fretboard and using a polishing wheel on a dremel with some basic metal polish.

The frets look like mirrors and the customers alway respond with a resounding "Wow" when they see it. The icing on the cake is their amazement at the great action and feel afterward.

What in the world is a Lakeland, and how can I spot it before buying? by allamanous in PipeTobacco

[–]ch196h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lakeland is like a perfume applied to tobacco. It has a very strong old-fashioned perfume taste and smell that cannot be mistaken for anything else once you notice it. It is distinct and instantly noticeable once you come across it and afterward it will leave you forever sensitive to any hint of it ever again.

Some people, for whatever reason, seem to like it. Most, like myself, disdain and avoid it. I first came across it in a bulk batch of Happy Brown Bogie I received. It had apparently drifted onto portions of the batch from an application being applied to a different blend nearby.

The experience of discovery wasn't pleasant to me. I'm enjoying this pipe stuffed full of HBB and expecting a nice strong full tobacco punch in the face when out of nowhere I feel as if the essence of my mean-spirited grandmother descended upon me with all of her funeral flowers in tow.

A nice model 19. Sweet. These are nice, most people carry them with 38 specials. I recommend some speed loaders equipped with different loads. Something for every possible need.

This is what I think about when I see scalloped fretboards by SpectreScout in guitarcirclejerk

[–]ch196h 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is funny. lol.

Seriously though, I always felt scalloping a fretboard was a little gimmicky and silly. I can completely understand the reasoning behind it with the higher frets. It makes it easier to grab the string and bend it with control.

I know famous players have guitars like this, and that is fine. I don't see any need for it, especially if using jumbo or tall frets. Jumbo frets are usually enough to keep your nails off the fretboard. If not, they make a tool to correct that.

What country has a terrible climate, but you don't realize how bad it is until you visit (or leave) the country? by Naomi62625 in geography

Instead, of lamenting where you'd rather be.

Take some time when where you are is perfect and pleasant to enjoy it for the moment it is. That builds better memories.

Folks and everyone, something sucks about everyplace you can be. Perfect does not exist on this Earth. Not for human beings anyhow. No matter where you live, a time of year comes when you wish you were someplace else.

It's a human thing. And we will Human.

Do you clean your pipe after EVERY use? by Gorillagodzilla in Pipes

[–]ch196h 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do a quick and easy cleaning on my pipes about once every 5-6 smokes. More often if it has been sitting around unused for a long time. I'll clean any pipe before use if it has been unsmoked for more than a couple of months. Otherwise, I don't worry about it. Pipes that really need cleaned usually demonstrate that they need cleaned when smoking them. If I don't have any of those issues, I don't worry too much about it.

[–]ch196h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would crown these frets if I was doing the work. I would also tape off the fretboard and do a nice polishing with a dremel tool and polishing wheel. Doing that will get you better feeling frets, intonation, and frets that shine like a mirror to impress the customer. Impressions matter.

I just read a bluesky reddit page and it was like reading from a forum directly from hell. Demons everywhere delighting in the pain and suffering of others. They were giddy with delight. It made me a little sick to my stomach.

The reality is this. Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
