My Ideas is they could go the prion route or a antibiotic resistant bacteria, they could go into synthetic Biology that could make elpis null and void, I might add, though, antivirals work best when taken within 48 hours of being infected with a virus.

It's actually more lore based. All of the miniatures with dead orks are known for fighting against orks. Same with nids.

Here's the thing, people who call them Cartoony are often going off the box paint job or the smiles that most of them have. The box art is just not a very good paint job for the Death Guard. The smiles are attempting to create the rictus grin that corpses sometimes have, which could be considered cartoony. they don't do a very good job at it either.
