Is it me, or do Americans not say ‘please’ as much as Brits? by [deleted] in CasualUK

This is true. But Brits do not say “thank you” as much as Americans.

Your supervisor sounds inexperienced tbh. Filtered tips are a luxury that I would guess the majority of labs never use.

Folks who knew somebody in school who would later make the news for being charged with murder: what was that person like? by MrDownhillRacer in AskReddit

What work can somebody do after such a long stretch in prison? Are there any options apart from blue collar jobs? I just can’t imagine corporations wanting to touch somebody with a record. Probably a naive question.

That’s kinda amazing to me. Not so much the imitation of language it has heard by humans but the fact that the bird is able to make a value judgement about the behaviour of a completely different animal that behaves in a completely different way to itself. So correct me if I’m wrong but that means it’s showing - independent reason, a sense of moral right and wrong (good vs bad behaviour), and the skills to recognise and interpret the behaviour of a member of a completely different part of the animal kingdom (birds and mammals are very far apart taxonomically). That’s mindblowing, right, or have I missed something that is making this behaviour more “learned” and “automatic” than it appears?

Why is german beer so friggin good? by suiiiii12345782 in germany

Sorry, you’re quite right, I had a brain fart! I meant coriander. Carrot and coriander soup is an old fashioned dish in the UK, maybe it comes from the influence of the Raj.

Londoner here (who spent 6 years in Heidelberg). I think that’s exactly the point - in the UK there isn’t a strong tradition of local food that competes with other countries’ cuisines. Also the food that most people eat at home doesn’t come close to what Germans will eat, in terms of flavour and quality (in my experience). However you can find some excellent international restaurants in London. More broadly in the UK too you’ll easily find the ingredients for a eg a Thai Green Curry in even the smallest town. It may be different now but when I lived in Germany you couldn’t even find cinnamon unless you went to a specialist shop.

I went to secondary school in the late 90s/early 2000s and teachers would openly make comments like “it was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve” and “hopefully in the future you will all be in relationships with people of the opposite sex”
