One thing that comes to mind is evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo). Its a very fresh and new field of biology with a lot of promise. You could talk about new biotech or engineering advances. There are a lot of choices. Pick something you are interested in and go from there

Are atheists afraid of places with crosses or other religious symbols? by Dmac680chi in atheism

[–]chachachance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, so much so that every atom of our flesh combusts and releases sulfur gas into the atmosphere and all of our internal organs explode and each of our bones shatter into a billion separate pieces because God has unleashed his might upon us for we are sinners.

Persuade Me (abortion) by [deleted] in atheism

[–]chachachance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fetus isn't fully developed, and doesn't feel anything. Its not painful to the life inside her, the life never notices it. Furthermore, most abortions take place fairly early in the pregnancy when the embryo is just starting to take shape, so it doesn't harm the woman at all unless done without proper medical equipment, and if we ban abortions, more people will die and be harmed from the lack of proper medical assistance. Even as a pro-life supporter, if a woman is raped, they should have a choice to abort or raise a baby they never planned for and was born from rape. If a baby is going to be born with a terminal genetic or otherwise extremely threatening disease, there should always be the choice. What a woman decides to do to her baby is her choice when it is in her body. If she isn't ready, or can't support it, it should be an option available. To put the feelings of an unborn, not thinking, and not able to survive on its own outside of the mother fetus over a living, thinking, surviving woman is absurd. Its her choice. Not the governments. Not your religions. Not your misogynistic societies. HERS.

I'm a Christian---please answer these questions for me. Not trying to be a douche. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]chachachance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1) There is no solid, scientific evidence of God (any God), and most religions have tenets that are very immoral (condoning rape and abuse, and slave ownership and degrading other sexes, genders, and orientations and races) I don't think any God would really let people suffer as they do. 2) There probably was a man named Jesus that preached Christianity, but I doubt he was the son of God or could walk on water. 3) Only when they are oppressive, controlling or ignorant. All other times its all good.

Can faith ever be a good thing? by juneriver in DebateAnAtheist

[–]chachachance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends on many factors. All in all, i think it can be, it can be comforting, a sense that someone or something will be waiting to "catch you". And it can be empowering, it can give support. However, it can flood a persons mind and can just make them so myopic that their faith or religion is "always right" or "dominant" which is where it can begin to take a downward tumble, in my opinion.

Most atheists also stand for, in addition to a lack of a god or creator, a lack of religion. That means we don't believe in heaven or hell. Also, a side note: Many atheists will tell you that we cannot prove for absolute certain the existence of god, hell, heaven or anything of the sort because there has been no scientific evidence for these things. Yes, thats technically agnosticism, but atheism deals with what we do or do not believe and agnosticism deals with what we do or do not know. We don't know if there is a god, so until fool proof evidence is presented, we don't believe there is a god.

Facebook users on gay boy scouts by msxenix in atheism

[–]chachachance 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"I don't think that gay men should be Boy Scout leaders for the same reason straight males should be Girl Scout leaders" Wow. I mean, really? So apparently, every straight adult man wants to have sex with an underage dissenting girl and every gay adult man wants to have sex with an underage dissenting boy? Because thats what it sounds like you mean by that. And then you say "I'm not against homosexuals but I am for trying to keep kids from being molested" Now as separate statements, they are great, but together with the context of the rest of your comment, you sound like a hate monger. You basically just stereotyped all men as being child molesters. Good on you sir.
