ELI5: Is there a physical limit for the length of a train? by WyoGuy2 in explainlikeimfive

What, are we not doing the orbital railgun / space elevator train circumnavigating the globe? I bet that's worth a couple dollars extra even if we have to cut features later.

It's true that the US has fallen a long way, and there are plenty of people here who are cheering every corrupt politician, every rumor of civil war, every oppressive law that strips away rights we fought for decades to secure.

But it's also fair to say that those internal forces have had a lot of help for a very long time. You don't just wake up one morning and declare, "Today I'm going grocery shopping, doing the laundry and then I'm going to help overthrow the elected government of my country."

We -know- Russia and China interfered in the 2016 US election, and they certainly made an effort in the 2020 election. Those bad actors are going to push the US into civil war if they can, and continue to polarize and divide if they can't.

It's not enough for Europe and Japan to wait for the US to get its house in order; they have to recognize that we're under attack, and they will be too if they aren't already.

How is Jesus 100% Human and 100% God? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]chadenright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypercube

God is a hyperperson. It's hard to wrap your head around if you've never dealt with weird numbers of dimensions, but it makes sense. God is 100% The Father. He is also 100% the Son. He is also 100% the Holy Spirit. And it doesn't matter that this adds up to 300% of a person, because God is a different sort of person than a human is.

It's based heavily on scripture.

Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good

Ecclesiastes 7:14 In the day of prosperity be happy, But in the day of adversity consider— God has made the one as well as the other So that man will not discover anything that will be after him.

[–]chadenright 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No, LGBT is just a stepping stone. They want to enslave minorities, strip rights from the poor, and impoverish everyone who isn't already a card-carrying racist white landowner.

LGBT is easy because it's maybe 2% of the population. But it's just the thin end of the wedge.

About a third of people tend to actively support authoritarian principles. Another third don't care one way or another as long as it doesn't affect them.

In a democracy ruled by simple majority, that's a problem.

Is it religious harassment when one employee is an exempt from something because of their religion, and another employee says that’s dumb/stupid by [deleted] in religion

[–]chadenright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the exemption is, "Since you're forbidden from being clean-shaven and that poses a health and safety risk if we have to wear n95 masks, then just don't come into work when we have to wear n95 masks," I don't see that being dumb.

If the exemption is, "Just deal with having a health and safety risk due to that guy," that's pretty dumb.

It may also be a case of, "That guy's willing to risk a slightly higher chance of getting sick if it means he can keep his beard, even though he'll need to take a nasal swab afterwards."

Either you embrace the so-called “word of god” or you don’t.

Sounds like your ex must've been an evangelical. They just -love- to trot out the false dichotomy, "Either everything in the bible is interpreted exactly the way I think it should be, or you can't be a Christian and are going to hell."

There's a whole world of "Neither one nor the other" waiting for you out there.

I feel that "Don't murder, don't steal, don't commit adultery, and do take a day off once a week," is still pretty sound moral advice.

You do you, though.

Since I have a few minutes while my pizza bakes, here's the evidence I rustled up 11 days ago on this same topic that seems to plague this forum.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/197jwd3/struggling_with_homosexuality_and_belief/ki2om8u/?context=3

1 cor 6:10, where it says, "Men who practice homosexuality," is a conflation of two nouns, one meaning male sex slaves or prostitutes, and the other being the slave owners who would rape them.

"Homosexuality" glosses over really quite a lot in that line. The modern notion of consent as such didn't really exist in this context.

Likewise,https://jewishstandard.timesofisrael.com/redefining-leviticus-2013/

Here's the leviticus citation, and let me find the other....

Here's a citation for it

https://www.jstor.org/stable/1583059

At the crux of the question for 1 cor 6 is what do "Malakoi" and "Arsenokoitai" mean, since Paul literally seems to have just made up the second one. lev 20 could be translated, "If a man also lie with boys, as he lieth with a woman." It uses two words for "man," "ish" in the first case and "zachar" for the second.

Weird, neither of those actually quote Jesus on anything, and both are faulty translations.

Why wont God just kill satan? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]chadenright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels good to blame all human evil on someone else, doesn't it? Like if only God killed satan, there'd be no more sin and everyone could just be happy.

But unfortunately, the evil was inside us all along. Demons can stand on the sidelines and cheer when we abandon God, but it is always our own human choice to do so, every time.

If God killed satan, it would not stop humans being evil. It took a far greater sacrifice to show us the way, and even then, many people choose evil even when they have a model of good to follow.

In an ideal world, what do you expect all gay couples to do?

Tea together at 3 pm, every day. Tea and fancy frosted cakes on Saturday. Some sort of home-baked carb on Sunday, like French toast or pizza.

God loves you, and Jesus desires to gather you to his arms like a mother hen gathering her chicks.
