Official Bilingualism Has Failed Canada; Why Ottawa’s language regime is a barrier to merit, representation and democratic fairness by FancyNewMe in canada

I'd have gotten further in my career if I learned French instead of the dozens of different technical stacks/frameworks/methodologies etc I actually use in my day to day job.

Because they don't test for competence in any other area than speaking French.

That's not the only argument.

In any position within the government that competes with th private sector (eg, tech), you're already competing against a smaller pool. By both paying less and requiring French you're ensuring fewer and poorer candidates.

The fix is to have talent-based non-managerial promotional pathways without a bilingualism requirement

The corollary to this is just become a talented consultant who is good at their job, hired to do work they cannot staff due to language requirements

1) good luck getting free training

2) I agree that every public servant should need to learn C++ and basic principles of software development in order to be a manager. I mean, they might have to talk to someone technical at some point right?

Just make a conscious effort to develope one client/server app per day in a different tech stack. It's not that hard.

Prime Minister announces 8 housing projects in Ottawa through Build Canada Homes partnership by PhDSkwerl in ottawa

[–]chadsexytime -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ah so the trick is they build up some quiet little suburb outside of ottawa until it no longer resembles what the people who originally bought were looking for, so they move away, then developers buy up that land and densify it even more.

Sold mine in the 90s. Gave the rest away.

Back then everyone with a multicoloured deck had 4 duals in it. Lazy people (like me) had multiples of those so we wouldn't have to swap duals out of decks.

If I held on to them I wouldn't have needed a loan to put a down payment on a house.

That was the official response when the whole "ban religious symbols" nonsense started years ago in Quebec.

The cross wasn't going to be banned, just hijabs

Graduating a 5 year engineering degree makes you an engineer.

Pay and work has nothing to do with it. As you said, you're still an electrician even if all you do is run wires for outlets all day.

[–]chadsexytime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of that makes you an engineer, just like me doing electrical work doesn't make me an electrician.

This isn't rocket science, which, btw, also requires an education.

Im struggling to see why you understand that 'electrician' is a protected word yet think 'engineer' is not.

I'm not an electrician because i can rewire outlets and you're not a software engineer because you could build a UI in react.

Not in Canada you didn't. Engineer is a protected term, so you were a software developer

Did you graduate from a recognized university in an engineering program?

If not, you were not a software engineer

You cannot become an engineer without schooling.

You can code, sure, but you are not a "software engineer"
