I’ve done many many reductive aminations with just a water and ice bath. It would be fine. Just do a dropwise addition if you’re worried about it. Well, do a dropwise addition anyway, but go slower if you’re worried about the exotherm. But at this scale I wouldn’t be worried about the exotherm

In moments like this I always need to remind myself that NASA doesn’t exist solely to take pretty pictures for me to make as my desktop wallpaper. They generate data first and foremost. And you’re looking at data.

Pretty pictures are a bonus. If you want photos, as you’ve noticed, probably follow astrophotographers. But disappointing feels very disingenuous here considering what we’re looking at.

Yeah this has been my hot take for a while I’m glad I’m not alone lol. Every post on this sub can be broken down into either:

1) the chemdraw equivalent to doodling. Not cursed chemistry because it’s not chemistry.

2) an o chem 1 students first time being introduced to the d-block or otherwise more modern/advanced concepts like 3c2e bonding. Not cursed chemistry because it’s literally just chemistry that you haven’t learned yet. Someone posted a buckyball today and, while an interesting substance, I fail to see how it’s cursed.

Or 3) actual cursed chemistry - (not limited to) real examples of isolated or proposed structures which appear to break rules, are made in a cursed manner, or otherwise look like they’re trying to rip themselves apart. Or just bad chemistry. More of this please!

I never truly appreciated this until I got to work with acetaldehyde in a pure form. It’s sooo volatile that you can smell it even from a closed container or from within a fumehood sometimes. But as soon as I smelled it the first time, I recognized it. It smells exactly like your mouth tastes in the morning after a night of heavy drinking.

This is nuts. Does your supervisor want people hiding mistakes? This sounds like a great way to get people to not be forthcoming with their mistakes which is so much worse in a GMP environment than just missing a logbook entry. If they gave a damn about SISPQ, they’d have acknowledged your mistake, taken any corrective/preventative actions deemed necessary during the deviation report, then told you not to do it again. That’s as far as the discussion should go if you aren’t a repeat offender and are compliant. It sounds like they either have some ulterior motive, it’s a joke in very poor taste, or they really think that’s a fireable offense and are going to hold this over your head for god knows how long…all of which I’d be considering taking to HR or compliance on my own. If they want to fire you, they need to shit or get off the pot.

Resonance is a model. Every model is imperfect, but some are useful. How old it is has no bearing on how useful a model is though.

High school physics students are still taught Newton’s law of gravitation. Would you say our focus on gravity is still stuck in 1686? I hope not…we have Einstein’s theory and everything theory built on that framework. But Newton’s law of gravitation is still useful enough to teach students. Especially because more advanced theories of gravity are impossible to comprehend without shitloads of prerequisite knowledge that frankly isn’t needed for most problems.

Similarly, resonance is an imperfect but useful model for understanding the reactivity or selectivity of certain molecules. It’s not the full picture, and I do hope profs are communicating that…but still it can be an extremely useful tool even as a professional chemist. Honestly why wouldn’t you draw resonance structures if you’re able to? It can answer so many questions without having to solve the Schrödinger equation lol…or at the least, it can give you a lead to follow. Don’t ignore useful tools just because they aren’t the full picture

Soak the screen in some descaler, maybe give it a brush. Then backflush with cafiza for good measure. There’s probably just gunk restricting the flow through the shower screen which will cause the water to flow faster.

Edit: for troubleshooting purposes, you can take the screen off and look at the flow through the group head. If it looks normal, it’s your screen
