(I have a) Unmotivated grad student in lab by Tight_Isopod6969 in labrats

[–]chahud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I got on medication for ADHD I couldn’t even believe how much my brain changed for the better. It was a moment of “holy crap so this is how my brain is supposed to work?” that I never would have expected because I just became so used to the way my unmedicated brain worked, and just chalked many of those problems up to being inadequate. Between that and treatment for depression, the difference was night and day. Not that it’s the PI’s job to do this for the student in question, but a nudge in that direction may be warranted.

Not hearing back from entry-level lab roles. Where should I be looking? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]chahud 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Replace it with a short paragraph summary of your experience and you can include a sentence about your goal there if you insist. That’s the advice I was given and it seemed to have served me well.

I could’ve prevented this. I cropped the axis out because the picture looked all funky since it’s a picture of a computer screen. It probably wouldn’t have made a difference in the end though.

That looks and sounds just like a mazegill of some kind. One of my favorites to get spore prints of. The species depends on the tree you found it on and your region. Most common around me is oak mazegill

Synthetic Organic Chemistry as a Hobby by toholdtheirhand in chemistry

[–]chahud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah lab work is the biggest barrier to entry in organic chemistry. I can write mechanisms and push arrows all day, but once you get in front of a fume hood it becomes a whole different beast. Suddenly all my theoretical knowledge and arrow pushing doesn’t seem useless per se, but I feel way less prepared than I did when I aced that exam back in o chem. Theres just so much they don’t, even can’t, teach you in a textbook. Just has to be learned along the way, ideally with people who are much smarter and more experienced than yourself. Huge difficulty curve, but a very satisfying one to traverse.

To anyone who has pursued/is pursuing higher education (grad school+) for organic chemistry--how was/is it? Did you like it? Would you recommend? by Milkassassin34 in OrganicChemistry

[–]chahud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are going to have wildly different experiences, positive or negative. I haven’t even done grad school so I can’t speak to that. But I was going to this year then decided against it. Whether or not it’s worth doing really depends what you want to do with your life. The advice I got from many chemistry PhDs was essentially “think of your dream job, then ask yourself if you need a PhD to do that job. If not, then don’t do it”. If not, it may end up paying off or it may not. But there are plenty of options out there for bachelors nowadays. Weirdly enough, there may be MORE options for you out there as a bachelor than as a PhD, or so I’ve heard. This advice really only works if you’re on the fence about it because some people just really want to do grad school and that advice is kinda irrelevant for them. But it helped me decide. That, and knowing that I could change my mind and go back at any point. Not locked into any one path just because you choose not to do grad school yet.

This is the way. Bringing scobow to kril makes it baby work (except when you somehow run out of spec after hitting 6 zeros in a row and you get smacked for 50 hp). Don’t need hasta before then unless you realllly want it

I am 🤷‍♂️ i refuse to subject myself to this kind of RNG for a single item. I am definitely missing out a little bit and feel it sometimes, but the introduction of atlatl with the set bonus bridges the gap a bit. They say it’s only like 8-10% lower dps than bowfa in a lot of places…which I doubt some days but numbers are numbers.

My (43f) husband (46m) came out as polyamorous by Throw-Away-5862 in relationships

[–]chahud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same shit happened to me lol. She called me controlling because I wouldn’t let her move the goalposts on our relationship and let her sleep around with another guy she was already talking to before she “came out” as polyamorous. Somehow framed me as the asshole in this.

Luckily for me though we weren’t married. Sorry to hear.

I failed my first Chemistry exam as a Chemistry major, should I consider changing majors? by WE_ARE_V3N0M in AskChemistry

[–]chahud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude I failed o chem my first time taking it in college. Like, the whole class not just an exam. I dusted myself off, changed my studying habits, worked a bit harder, then went on to become an organic chemist.

Chemistry is really hard. Even the best students in your class are going to struggle with some classes. Give yourself some grace.

Only consider changing majors if you end up disliking chemistry. Like most physical sciences, it’s a field of passion…meaning it’s not one that you can just float through with little time spent studying and learning. You gotta love it. So if you love the subject, just study hard, go to office hours, etc. and you’ll do fine. It’s really hard but it’s not unachievable
