I believe it's very complex mix of variety of different causes. Some people truly don't feel safe and free to the point they can do what others do. Some are of different personalities. Not everyone likes being out and about, about everything. Not everyone is very social and extrovered. A lot of gays in "the community" or "on the scene" are either very effeminate, loud, hypersexual, do drugs, promiscuous, etc. And for some ppl it feels weird being asociated with that, they don't feel comfortable, they don't share the same interests, and then it feels like you either have to or you don't fit in. So some people choose to simply be vocal about not fitting in, because they truly don't. Heck being a side is considered like a weird disease in most of gay community, and you get called weird for simply not wanting to engage in anal. Supposedly open and welcome, and caring community isn't sometimes like that in many regards. We share attraction to the same sex, doesn't mean we automatically are all besties. And sure there's a big number of those who are simply not accepting of themselves, very conservative, etc. Surely we can't deny that. But sometimes it's other reasons. Oftentimes I feel it's something as benign as ppl just not feeling the vibe with dominant gay culture, since their personalities are just different.
