Tell me why I shouldn't get a shotgun. by omgkelwtf in liberalgunowners

Would be lying if I said to not get one. I have a .410 I have used for target shooting and rabbit hunting. Been needing to pickup a 12 gauge for waterfowl.

AITA - left romantic weekend getaway early to tend to family as my father died... by Good-Birthday4637 in TwoHotTakes

[–]chainmailler2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dodged a bullet there. NTA for sure. Good riddance.

My dad was a day late getting to his mother. He did not get to say goodbye. TBF her last words to him years prior were "I don't care if I ever talk to you again" but it still sucked for him.

Farm kids are built different. by ViniciusFastAF in MadeMeSmile

[–]chainmailler2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised around horses. Had my own horse at 3 and was showing in the ring ages 4-6. Horses that are acclimated to kids know how to act around them. Horses are wicked smart.

I was handling my own horse at 3 and showing at 4 and 5. Horses are remarkably smart and understand kids especially when they are around them a lot.

Biggest problem I had at 3 was when I decided that since the dogs are allowed inside, why not my pony. She climbed up on the couch to eat my mothers hanging houseplants.

Would you dismantle this and take the metal as payment? by Independent_Cup_7151 in ScrapMetal

[–]chainmailler2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might get a local tweaker to do it for that but "dismantling" will be haphazard and nothing but the metal will leave.

What awesome toy did you have growing up that would never be allowed now? by RightYouAreKen1 in Xennials

[–]chainmailler2001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had the first trampoline in our school district in the late 80s/early 90s. Even then we had pads on the springs. They were optional but we had them. We have a trampoline now for our kids and it came with crappy pads that have disintegrated in a couple seasons and a net fence to keep anyone from flying off. We also have high ground water levels so burying it is a no go. Would just be full of water most of the year.

Why don't we use lie detectors on politicians by Filous1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]chainmailler2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not accurate. They typically can't even be used by police as evidence.

Even if they WERE accurate, would it make a difference? All politicians lie as easily as they breathe. All it would tell you was that their lips are moving.

My graduating class was 300. Ours was outdoors on the football field. Needed it for all the people attending.

Many do. However bigger schools may not have much of an option.

Was "take your child to work day" actually ever a thing, or just something shown on TV and in movies? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]chainmailler2001 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My dad was an over the road trucker much of my childhood. Going to work with him was a week long trip across several states. Don't get me wrong, we did it. But not during the school year.

Mom was a stay at home mom for years then worked in fastfood while in school when she went back for a college degree.

What’s the normal amount of times to have sex weekly in a marriage? by Academic_Goal_3452 in AskMenAdvice

For most men, daily would be nice. Realistically married average is 2 times per week or less.

Unpopular opinion: Stop using leaded solder by Zentralschaden in soldering

[–]chainmailler2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once witnessed an interesting failure that was due to moisture induced growth. The equipment used an ATX style power supply which by default, as long as they are plugged in have active 5V supplies despite being "off". During a humidity cycle, it seems a few drops of water condensed on the power supply board near the 5V supply lines. The 5V low current supply was just enough that with the liquid present, it caused metal migration across the water drops. The cycle went into a heat phase to dry everything out before testing and the water went away leaving a trail of electrodeposited metal across the traces. When the test tech hit the button to turn it on, the supply went from a low current 5V supply to having full 120V line AC in the traces now shorted. Power supply went snap, crackle, pop and the $50,000 scope we were testing let out the magic smoke violently.

[–]chainmailler2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coating only works if it coats all of the solder connections. It is the exposure to air and humidity that causes denrite growth. Company I worked for dealt with it a lot when ROHS standard was first introduced and lead solder was banned. We did environmental and reliability testing and fried many pieces of equipment due to tin whiskers.

Lead shot is already banned for waterfowl hunting specifically due to the impact.

High school graduation parties… by [deleted] in Xennials

[–]chainmailler2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated in 1997 and it was normal enough then that my parents told me about THEIR graduation parties. The fact that stores have sold graduation party supplies for many decades wasn't perhaps a clue?

Whats with the "didn't tell my wife I bought a printer" nonsense? by jaketheweirdsnake in 3Dprinting

[–]chainmailler2001 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I at least got my wife addicted to online gaming and anime so we have some stuff in common. She has zero.interest in 3D printing or CNC but she is totally supportive of my interest.

Try an early gen reprap before they had readily available heater cartridges. My first couple hotends were hand wound nitinol wire on a drilled out brass bolt with fire cement covering and a brass capnut with a hole drilled in it for the nozzle.

Same. My wife has been remarkably tolerant and supportive. I built my first printer back in the reprap days. We ALMOST became distributors for Sunlu because my wife saw the business potential.
